Th e Silver Spoon Diner – A LeFrak City Tradition The Silver Spoon Diner might well be a golden example of a true family owned and run operation. Th e diner, originally called the “3-Star Coff ee Shop,” is part of Le- Frak City and has been at its location on 58th Avenue and Junction Blvd. since 1982. It was started by John Raktizis, who had emigrated from Greece in the 1970s, and who enlisted the help of his oldest son, George, to get the restaurant up-and-running. Business took off , and it only took a couple of years for the diner to expand and be renamed the Silver Spoon. “It’s a classic New York Greek diner,” George said, and indeed it is, with an enormous menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. “One of our specialties,” George said, “is our Mediterranean salad, which is a garden salad topped with grilled chicken, feta cheese and olives. It’s one of our most popular lunches.” Another hot item on the menu is homemade spanakopita (Greek spinach pie) as well as their paninis, wraps and sandwiches. And, in keeping with the diverse neighborhood, Silver Spoon’s menu also includes everything from quesadillas to steaks and chops to assorted Italian specialties. George runs the restaurant along with his sister, Anna, and his brother, Nick, who both joined the business in 1991. George said that they made some improvements on the diner over the years, “but last year,” he said, “we renovated the whole thing top to bottom.” George noted how the neighborhood has evolved in the 34 years he’s been here. “Th e neighborhood’s really been changing over the last few years,” he said, “with all the new retailers and franchises here now. And with all of the renovations being done at LeFrak City, it’s drawing new people. Th e area is really booming.” Th e Silver Spoon is open from 6am to 11pm seven days a week, and they also off er free delivery. And don’t forget: If you’re hosting a holiday party, Silver Spoon also offers a catering menu that includes appetizers, wrap and hero sandwiches and hot buff ets such as lasagna, chicken parmigiana, sausage and peppers, and more. LeFrak City is Proud to Acknowledge Its Veterans LeFrak City’s Armed Forces veterans were invited to a special luncheon in their honor this past November 11. Approximately 20 LeFrak City veterans attended the feast, which was held in the Continental room, where they enjoyed ziti, eggplant parmigiana, pizza and other Italian specialties. Th e attendees represented diverse war experiences, including the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as Desert Storm. Randi Koch Nir, Director of Residential Lease Enforcement, organized the event, which was inspired by her own father. “I lost my dad about 18 months ago,” she said, “and he was very proud of his military service. Th is was a way to remember him and acknowledge and thank all of the veterans we live with every day.” Randi said, “Th e guys were very appreciative. Th e luncheon was our way of saying thank you to them, but they all were thanking us!” The afternoon was such a success that Randi is looking forward to making this a LeFrak City tradition. “I hope to make this an annual event,” she said, “and do it again next year, Randi Koch Nir with attendees at the LeFrak City Veteran’s Day Luncheon and the year aft er that, and the year aft er that.” It will certainly be a special 28 DECEMBER, 2016 | WWW.QNS.COM | LEFRAK CITY COURIER day for all of LeFrak City’s veterans to look forward to each year.
