Where Art Meets Education LEFRAK CITY COURIER | WWW.QNS.COM | DECEMBER, 2016 31 comprising the 320 square miles of New York City. When it was introduced in 1964, the Panorama was one of the World’s Fair’s most successful attractions. Aft er the Fair, updates were accurately recreated in the model by Lester’s team in 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1974 to keep up with the rapidly evolving development of the City. Th ough the Museum opened in 1972, only sporadic changes were made in the intervening years solely due to donations from architects and developers. During the 1980s boom in construction, models of the AT&T (Sony), Citicorp, and other buildings were donated and placed on the model, though most public works and City projects were not included. In 1992, Lester & Associates was again enlisted to bring the entire model up to date. In the spring of 2009, the Museum launched its Adopt-a-Building program aimed at securing the future of the model while simultaneously bringing it up to date. For as little as $50, real estate on the Panorama can be “purchased,” with “property owners” receiving a deed in exchange for their donation. On a larger scale, the installation of new buildings on the Panorama, including Citi Field, Yankee Stadium, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant and 27 buildings in Battery Park City, allow recent additions to the urban landscape to be refl ected while funding the ongoing care, maintenance and educational programming that brings this miniature city-within-a-city to thousands of visitors each year. e Neustadt Collection of Ti any Glass – On long term view Established in 1969, The Neustadt Collection of Tiff any Glass is an independent non-profit collection dedicated to fostering a better understanding and appreciation of the artwork of Louis C. Tiff any. It’s called the Neustadt Collection aft er Dr. Egon Neustadt and his wife Hildegard, immigrants from Austria who settled in Queens, amassed an enormous collection of Tiff any lamps over the course of 50 years. (Fun fact: Th e Neustadts purchased their fi rst Tiff any lamp in 1935 for $12.50!) Th e collection includes an extraordinary array of fl oral and geometric lamps as well as landscape and fi gural windows. A unique feature of the collection is a vast, oneof a-kind archive of original fl at glass and pressed-glass “jewels” used by Tiffany Studios, which provides valuable insight into the development of the stained-glass movement in America at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1995, Th e Neustadt Collection Visiting the Queens Museum partnered with the Queens Museum for a permanent Tiff any gallery and educational programming. Th is partnership has special signifi cance because Tiff any’s glass furnaces, metal foundry and workshops were located in Corona. Th rough changing exhibitions in the Neustadt Gallery, visitors not only enjoy the beauty of this extraordinary collection, but also gain a deeper appreciation of the artwork through a discussion of materials, fabrication processes and historical context.
