Art BY ORESTES GONZALEZ [email protected] The Factory, located at 3-30 47th Ave., hosted the very successful AWAKE! ENGAGE! TRANSFORM! exhibit during the LIC Arts Open during the week of May 17 through May 24. Hundreds of people enjoyed art, dance, music and video performances in a setting that was described as “engaging and thought provoking.” Even though LICAO officially lasted seven days, due to its popularity, the management at The Factory Photos by Steven Speliotis AWAKE! ENGAGE! TRANSFORM! generously extended the exhibit Awake!Engage!Transform! for an additional three weeks through June 12. This all inclusive show, which encompassed paintings, photography, graphics, video, ceramics and fiber art, was designed as 3 carefully curated shows, all dealing with the different socio/economic political issues that are at the forefront of our world today. UPSTANDERS!!! curated by artist Karen Dimit, had gathered a selection of celebrated artists from the LIC community and beyond. Channeling social activism into their work, this varied group 34 JUNE 2017 I LIC COURIER I www.qns.com addressed the current social turmoil we are currently experiencing. GLOBAL AWARENESS curated by artist Jude Amsel, took on the environmental impact humans leave on the planet. This group of artists from diverse backgrounds and cities were chosen for creating works from nature and the found urban environment and how it has been marked by man. DISRUPTION curated by photographer (and LIC COURIER contributor) Orestes Gonzalez, is a group photo exhibit that tackles the interpretation of the word “Disruption” in the form of 5 distinct series. Showing lives affected by immigration, police violence, and personal and physical isolation, the show brings awareness to the current policies in the world’s political stage and its consequences. As the LIC ARTS OPEN, directed by The Secret Theater founder Richard Mazda, moves into its 8th year, it will continue to develop and mature in scale and quality. The rapid growth of LIC is transforming our neighborhoods and its population, making cultural happenings like the Long Island City Arts Open (LICAO ) even more important to all who live in this area.
