This issue we are happy to have a very personal story from our dear friend and LIC Courier writer Alan Capper. Since going through heart surgery late last year he has been away from his Long Island City home and staying at a rehabilitation center in Whitestone. In his heart-warming article he recalls everything he loved about living in his neighborhood and how he can’t wait to get back home. We continue to wish him a speedy recovery! For our front cover this month we interviewed artist Cindy Avroch whose studio in Long Island City is filled with her paintings and sculptures. This craft is something she picked up from spending nights as a child in the kitchen with her mother, who was part of the first graduating class of the Fashion Institute of Technology. Take a look at her one-of-a-kind pieces! In this August issue we are happy to welcome the first of two public plazas in Sunnyside. Bliss Plaza, located at 46th Street and Queens Boulevard underneath the elevated No. 7 train, now includes tables, chairs and decorative planters. What a great way to put to use such space! This month we also take a look at a new kind of partying in Astoria called Quiet Clubbing. Every other Friday patrons at the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden put on wireless headphones courtesy of Quiet Events and rock out to three live DJs. After having checked out the event ourselves, we definitely recommend you and some friends head there. We spoke with actor Johnny Solo who co-owns three establishments in Astoria, two of which have just opened in the past few months, and a former Long Island City comedian hosting a new stand-up show on Fox. Take a look at a group of Astoria friends who are turning to Kickstarter to raise money to take their all-natural hot sauce called Chi-Cho Sauce and put it on store shelves and restaurant tables. We also have up-to-date information on the homeless shelter placed within the Westway Motor Inn on Astoria Boulevard and the controversial Astoria Cove development, which in September will go to the City Council for a vote. Also, don’t forget to check out the LIC Flea & Food, located Saturdays at the outdoor lot at Fifth Street and 46th Avenue, and the Astoria Flea & Food at Kaufman Astoria Studios which will be opened every Sunday until August 31. Make sure to make both those popular flea markets your next weekend destination. The summer is far from over so we still encourage you all to go out and explore your neighborhoods.
