Art Calendar December MOMA PS1 Museum of the moving image 22-25 Jackson Ave. I 718-784-2084 “Latifa Laâbissi, Self Portrait Camouflage” Jan. 8, 2017 In her stark and highly personal full-length solo performance, the choreographer, Latifa Laâbissi—who was raised in France by Moroccan-born parents—uses tropes of caricature and the grotesque to conjure the silent aggressions and tensions at the heart of some immigrant experiences. Performing the piece naked, in bright spotlight against a sterile white backdrop; fully exposed to the world, Laâbissi becomes an object to be gazed at, studied, and scientifically dissected—evoking the imperialist custom of exhibiting indigenous people at World’s Fairs. 52 DECEMBER 2016 i LIC COURIER i www.qns.com 36-01 35th Ave. 718-777-6888 “Dick Tracy in Tut’s Fever Movie Palace” On view through Dec. 30 There are daily screenings of episodes of classic movie serials in “Tut’s Fever Movie Palace,” an artwork by Red Grooms and Lysiane Luong that pays homage to the movie palace. In the action-packed first movie serial adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip, Ralph Byrd stars as the strong-jawed crime fighter who is trying to bust the notorious Spider Ring gang and to rescue his kidnapped brother. NOGUCHI MUSEUM 9-01 33rd Road 718-204-7088 “Self-Interned, 1942: Noguchi in Poston War Relocation Center” On view Jan. 18, 2017 through Jan. 7, 2018 February 19, 2017, marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, the notorious wartime directive that authorized the internment of Japanese citizens and American citizens of Japanese heritage living in the Western United States. This exhibition explores Noguchi’s extraordinary decision—despite being exempt from internment as a resident of New York—to enter the Poston War Relocation Center, in the Arizona desert, hoping to contribute something positive to this forcibly displaced community, to which he had never felt more connected. In Noguchi’s words, “Thus I willfully became part of humanity uprooted.” Photo courtesy MoMA PS1
