CUT THE BULLYING FREE North Shore Towers fashion event to raise awareness and help battle bullying Bullying is no laughing matter. The effects of bullying by peers may be worse than maltreatment by adults, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Fortunately, there are grass-roots anti-bullying organizations like Sydney’s Smiles. Founded in December 2016 by Long Beach High School 10th-grader Sydney Brett, the non-profit or-ganization aims to equip kids with the tools they need to end bullying in their environment. Born with dyslexia, Sydney herself was the victim of bullying both physical and verbal, not only by her peers but also by her teachers. Not wanting other children to feel as she did and remove the negative stereotypes of children living with invisible disabilities, she decided to help other children to take a stand against being bullied. Thus, was born Sydney’s Smiles. By teaching how to be an “upstander” instead of a “bystander,” Sydney’s Smiles is dedicated to the idea that everyone has a right to be respected for who they are. Everyone can play a role in creating a culture of inclusion and acceptance. Sydney overcame her own victimization, by getting involved in pageantry, where she excelled and cur-rently holds the title of New York Junior Teen for the USA National Miss Organization. It was through pageantry Sydney discovered a passion for community service. She is a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award—bronze, silver and gold— for her many hours of service, as well as receiving citations and awards from various local and state politicians. Her goal for Sydney’s Smiles is to spread awareness about all types of bullying and the negative effects it has on children, speak at public schools and communities, and let students know they are not alone. On Thursday, July 6, North Shore Towers will be in the pink, celebrating the annual “Babes & Guys.” The event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, began more than twenty years ago as “Babes Against Cancer,” a ladies-only golf event, named after Babe Zaharias, the legendary American athlete of the early 20th Century who died from colon cancer at the age of 45. It has since incorporated the Men’s Golf Association and includes card playing and a luncheon for all. But even if you’re neither a golfer nor card player, there are many ways you can be a part. You could sponsor a hole or a lift, or dedicate a leaf to the “Tree of Life,” which stands outside the Country Club entrance each year. Returning as Event Chair, Judy Lev promises all the joy and excitement of past seasons and more, including the popular retailer event in September.
