Raising the Bar Towers on the Green renovation begins STORY BY STEPHEN VRATTOS Photos by Stephen Vrattos and Julie Weissman Though “closed for renovation” since February, Phase 1 of the anticipated Towers on the Green renovation began on Tuesday, March 7, while plans for the redesign of the rest of the catering hall await final approval from the Board. If all goes according to plan, Buffy and Angelo expect the doors to reopen the first week of May 2017. Helping fulfill their vision is Beth Donner Design Group, favorite designer of NST, whose prior work includes the coop’s building lobbies and Towers Restaurant. As evinced by the dramatic transformation of the restaurant, residents can expect an even more spectacular unveiling for the sister catering facility, one finally worthy of North Shore Towers and one which will see it through the next forty years and beyond. Phase 1 encompasses the bar, bathroom and fireplace areas. Due to the extensive duct work throughout the drop ceiling, there was little that could be done via physical alteration to “open up” the room. Ergo, the illusion of expansion and creating a feeling of airiness and light had to be achieved in much the same way as was accomplished so successfully with the restaurant: by use of color and reflective materials, and creative use of the space. Gone is the chunky wood of the bar top, facing and drop-down framing that hung over the counter, like the Sword of Damocles. Milky white, glossy, Mother-of-Pearl tiling will now face the bar, topped with Early concept for the new bar design courtesy of Beth Donner Design Group Last Call!
