ivory granite, accented with silver and gold flakes. Custom-design and fabricated circular lighting will “float” above at varying levels to give the illusion of clouds, sunlight streaming through. Further illumination will be provided by burnished silver and crystal sconces custom-designed and fabricated in England. Dark porcelain floor tiles will segregate the bar from the main hall and enhance the effect of the marble and Mother-of-Pearl tiling. The bar will now feature three sides of seating, allowing greater movement and utility to patrons. Buffy initially envisioned a grand arc for the bar, until Angelo explained its impracticality from a drink servers’ POV. A half-moon may certainly look beautiful, but would create terrible traffic problems for bartenders, bumping into each other during affairs. This balance of design and function is part of what make Buffy and Angelo such an effective pair. Angelo’s decades of working some of New York City’s finest restaurants and catering facilities has given him Lav Story (l. to r.) New Bathroom wallpaper, custom wainscoting tile and glass backsplash tile invaluable experience. Coupled with Buffy’s exemplary sense of design, drama and taste, the duo form a formidable team. Both bathrooms will showcase wainscoting with custom porcelain tiles, glistening silver wallpaper and multi-colored glass tiles for the backsplash. “My ladies’ room… Let me tell you…” Buffy enthused. “I found someone in California to make them custom for me, $70 each.” Though both lavatories remain the same size and in the same location, a new unisex main entrance and corridor is being added, offsetting the need for two separate doors and people from entering directing from the floor of an event. This new access-way is overly wide to accommodate mobility devices, such as walkers and wheelchairs, and will feature two larger communal washing areas, allowing greater room in the “business” section for more toilets and urinals. The former coat-check closet to the left of the fireplace is being removed to further open the bar area and enable the installation of a grander, more dramatic gas fireplace. In keeping with Buffy’s penchant for extravagance, the new fireplace will entertain a width of between 8–10 feet, far exceeding the standard 6-foot maximum size. It will also be elevated and angled toward the main hall, to be seen by the whole space, adding dramatic flair beyond the confines of the bar. It, too, will get a facelift of Motherof Pearl tiling. A new coat-check closet will be built in the space to the left of the main Arcade entrance, formerly the real estate of the diminutive stage. A portable stage will be used in the future, enabling a plethora of table arrangements, depending on the event and wishes of the client. The resultant variety of option available with a portable stage also helps offset the structural beam, which stand in the center of the hall. Those beams will no longer be an eyesore, but rather sublime focal points, covered in Swarovski crystals aglow with backlighting. But before any of these enhancements are made, all the duct work will be cleaned and aerated, and replaced where needed; extensive rewiring and upgrading of electrical systems, pipes and plumbing, all of which hasn’t been touched in more than forty years, since North Shore Towers was built. The upgrades and renovations to the “guts” of Towers of the Green will prepare the space for the next four decades and then some. “I always look to do something unexpected,” Buffy said of her approach. “I want people to notice that when they come in.” Roll out the barrow Shovel?
