Migdal Chapter OFGL Hadassah at North Shore Towers presents… THE YOM HASHOAH HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL PROGRAM The Migdal Chapter of Hadassah at North Shore Towers and the North Shore Towers Board of Trustees will co-sponsor the annual Yom Hashoah Holocaust Memorial Program on Monday, April 24, in the VIP Room at 7:30 p.m. The featured speaker will be Gloria Glantz, a survivor and student of the Holocaust. Glantz was placed in the care of a righteous Polish woman at age three in 1942. A wife, “Chess” Mates NST Club welcomes lovers of the game STORY AND PHOTOS BY STEPHEN VRATTOS “None of us are masters or experts,” explained Richard Domash of his and fellow Chess Club members’ level of play. “We all just play for fun.” Domash began the club with fellow North Shore Towers residents and chess aficionados, David Kossover and David Zolondek, two years ago. Initially calling themselves “Check Mates,” the men sought chess-playing brethren through the Men’s Club website and the North Shore Towers portal on the social network nextdoor. com, as well as posting posters in each building. Revising the name to “Chess Mates,” to more clearly identify the club’s raison d’etre, the club currently numbers approximately a half dozen like-minded chess fans—men and women—who meet every Thursday afternoon to share a game or two in the Men’s Card room by the Golf Pro Shop in the Country Club. According to Domash, all are welcome; men, women, children, whether longtime players or curious neophytes, the only exception being non-Country Club members. But Domash assures that any exclusion was an oversight and unintentional, and the Chess Club is prepared to move to one of the downstairs card rooms at a moment’s notice if there is interest by non-Country Club members in the future. Like many chess players, Domash was first introduced to the game at home. “I used to watch my mom and dad play when I was six,” he revealed. The young boy’s inquisitiveness did not go unnoticed and soon dad was teaching Domash the fundamentals. It was only then the fledgling chess aficionado learned the set on which his parents played and taught him was missing a piece. His son’s interest in chess, however, prompted Mr. Domash to rectify the problem by giving young Richard $5 to purchase a new set. It was a generous sum at that mother, grandmother and retired teacher, she lives in Port Washington. Glantz is known for her inspiring lectures to many Long Island groups on behalf of The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove. Hadassah members and the Towers community are invited to participate in this annual memorial program, which honors the loss of six million Jews. Chess Mates (l. to r.) Richard Domash, Richard Sokolov, Helene Cohen and David Kossover time and Dad was fully expecting a handful of change upon his son’s return. Yet, Richard had very little leftover money to give, having spent nearly the entire amount—not on candy, gum or baseball cards—but rather the nicest chessboard and pieces he could purchase for five dollars. “It was a nice wooden set and it came in a wooden box,” Domash said. “I still have it!” In 2014, when Domash moved to North Shore Towers with his wife, Toby, three years ago, he was surprised to learn there wasn’t already a Chess Club, given the variety of pastimes represented by clubs at the co-op, everything from Mah-Jongg to French enthusiasts. Fortunately, he was not alone in his love of chess. Fellow Men’s Club members, Kossover and Zolondek, also shared a passion for the game, and soon the trio were organizing the club. Domash urges anyone interested in joining to visit a weekly gathering in the Men’s card room on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. If you’ve never played the game, but have always been curious, now’s the chance to finally learn. “What me and the other members will do is teach the fundamentals, the basic moves,” Domash explained. “You’ll learn by playing, like the rest of us did. We’re all self-taught; no one is trained or took classes. “It’s very informal, very friendly. I hope we can grow to a nice casual group who share camaraderie and friendship… and a game of chess!” Gloria Glantz will speak at the Yom Hashoah Memorial on April 24 A moving experience YOM HASHOAH HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MONDAY, APRIL 24, IN THE VIP ROOM AT 7:30 P.M.
