“Bruce on the Loose!” Photo by Julie Weissman On Wednesday, March 15, popular lecturer James Coll presented a program on Bruce Springsteen to a full house of Women’s Club members at their monthly meeting. Noting this was Women’s History Month, Mr. Coll, a former detective, educator and lecturer, remarked on Bruce’s influence on women and how Springsteen’s mother inspired him. From the rocker’s birth in 1949, Coll traced Springsteen’s struggles and triumphs in his personal and professional life. Citing Elvis Presley and the Beatles as some of Springsteen’s early influences, Coll also spoke of how Springsteen’s complicated relationship with his distant father factored into his development. It was his mother who encouraged her son to follow his musical passion, and she took out a loan of $50 to buy him his first guitar. This ultimately launched the career of one of the most successful rock stars of modern times. Springsteen strove to be different, and Coll played snippets of his songs to spotlight the lyrics and different guitar strains from accoustic to electric. Aided by a PowerPoint presentation of Springsteen’s family, fellow band members and album covers, Club members were treated to an insightful discussion by the music loving Coll, who stated he was “blown away” the first time he heard “Born in the USA.” Coll meticulously followed Springsteen’s journey from an indifferent parochial school student in New Jersey to a record contract at Columbia to international acclaim. Audience member Claire Levitan remarked that on a visit to Israel she noticed Springsteen had a large following with the young people of the country. Coll wrapped up with a fitting image of Bruce dancing with his mother on stage. His love and devotion to the lady who nurtured his passion for music pays homage to all women who can have such a positive influence on the lives of their children. Delights and Highlights to Come...
