FEBRUARY 2017 • Volume 13 • Issue 2 GOOD BANKING STARTS WITH A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY TD BANK IS ABOUT A LOT MORE THAN CONVENIENCE 9 Communities Th at Th ey Serve New York Community Bank (NYCB) is committed to all of the communities it serves, but no matter how large the organization becomes, it will always have a soft spot for its home town. Queens is where NYCB got its start and continues to flourish today. Since its origins in 1859, the philosophy of the trustees of Queens County Savings Bank, a division of NYCB, had always been community–driven. This was a group of strong leaders who felt they and their neighbors were not being well served by banks outside of Queens, and they were committed to providing a more hands-on local approach to banking. Needless to say, this same approach applied to corporate citizenship. Today, branches in all of NYCB’s regions model their community support and initiatives on the work done in Queens. NYCB not only provides the people and businesses of Queens top quality products and services, but it also does its part to ensure that the borough remains the vibrant, culturally rich, family oriented destination it is today, by supporting education, arts, health and community enrichment programs and initiatives. By helping to designate Corona Heights as a Banking Development District (BDD), NYCB recognized that it had an opportunity to make a difference in a community that had lacked banking services for quite some time. Because banks can play an important role in promoting individual wealth, community development and revitalization, it is important to reduce the number of unbanked people in a community. NYCB has been able to do that by working with the State and establishing the borough’s only BDD. Even prior to Corona Heights being officially established as a BDD, Queens County Savings Bank was visible, and once established in the neighborhood, it brought long-term support to the community in the form of savings programs, financial literacy education, access to credit and life enhancements such as breast cancer screenings, access to cultural events and more. We have forged a strong relationship with the Latin Women in Action, a nonprofit organization that provides services to the Corona community such as assistance with immigration processes, English language classes, domestic abuse assistance, counseling, and all types of health services. NYCB has also developed business relationships with the many nonprofit organizations, civic groups and houses of worship, and NYCB is able to provide these organizations the expertise and service that all of our individual customers and businesses have come to know and expect. Our reputation for strength, stability and service allows these groups to focus on the good they do, knowing that we are there to help. We are a reliable and trustworthy resource. We understand that they, like many small business operations, have limited time, resources and minimal staff, so we are ready to support them any way we can. NYCB has long-standing relationships with most of the iconic cultural and family-oriented organizations in the borough. Whether it is working with New York Families for Autistic Children, The Queens Museum, Queens Theatre in the Park, The Botanical Gardens, The Child Center of NY, St. Demetrious Church in Astoria or presenting performances at The Kupferberg Center for the Arts, NYCB is there. We consider ourselves partners with the nonprofits we work with. Our common goal is to bring out the best in the neighborhoods and communities we serve by supporting arts, culture, health, education and wellness initiatives in the communities where we live and work. Our NYCB family members not only work in the community, they live here and are active in school, charity and neighborhood events. You can see them walking for causes that are close to their heart, collecting funds in branches and at fundraisers and representing the Bank at sponsored community events. With over 150 years of neighborhood support under our belt, we are proud to celebrate our roots and all that makes Queens so special and proud to enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve. To learn more about NYCB visit any of our branches or www.mynycb.com. NYCB and its Queens County Savings Bank Division sponsored the “Survivor Tent” at this year’s American Cancer Society Making Strides walk in Flushing meadows Park and had a team of employees who also walked for the cause. NYCB proudly sponsors the family programming at the Queens Museum. TD Bank is proud of the work that we do not only for our commercial and personal banking customers, but for the communities that we serve. From Maine to Florida, we produce more than 3,100 local initiatives to engage with the communities in which we live and work. For businesses, for-profit and non-profit organizations alike, we hold seminars and sponsor programs designed to educate them on banking and financing options to help further grow their businesses. We also support consumers by providing financial literacy and education programs, including First Time Homebuyer seminars and workshops, and granting community development loans and investments. And through the TD Charitable Foundation we're able to support non-profit organizations that offer affordable housing to the local community and other programs and initiatives that give back to our neighbors. In Queens, we have partnered with various nonprofit organizations including the Queens Chamber of Commerce, the Queens Library Foundation, St. John's University, the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation and the Long Island City Partnership to present financial literacy, environmental and educational events. Our Bring Change events have helped raise funds for various community partners, as well as raise awareness of their programs and services. And through our Bring Change program, which are hosted in-store events, TD employees work side by side with the public to connect and support the local community Additionally, we volunteer and partner with many volunteerism services to offer WOW! Zones sessions, which provide career education at high schools across the borough. We also support organizations such as the Queens Economic Development Corporation, which provides business assistance to new and emerging entrepreneurs with emphasis on immigrants, women and minorities. Assistance includes individual counseling and workshops in business planning, finance, operations and marketing. And organizations such as Upwardly Global provide help to skilled immigrants who are unemployed or significantly underemployed to restart their careers in the NYC metro area. A central component of this work is partnering with leading employers to provide access to our talent pool and organize skills-based volunteer events. NYCB and its Queens County Savings Bank Division sponsored the “Survivor Tent” at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Walk in Flushing Meadows Park, and their employees walked for the cause.
