FRANCIS PREP LAUNCHES INAUGURAL STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN ROME AND ASSISI Fresh Meadows, NY - - When Dr. Stephen A. Marino visited Assisi on pilgrimage in 2008, he immediately knew that he wanted to return one day. So in 2013, he and 13 family members and friends traveled there on vacation. He wanted those close to him to undertsand just how special the medieval walled city is. When his party arrived at the train staion, in valley below the mountain city, and saw Assisi perched atop Mount Subasio, many exclaimed, “Oh my God, where are we!” After walking through the eaternmost gate by the Basilica of St. Clare, they relaized how little the city had changed in the 800 plus years since the city’s patron saint, Francis of Assisi, walked the same streets. Marino was sitting with his wife Kate in the main square, during their last night in Assisi, when he realized that St. Francis Prep, his alma mater where he has chaired the English department since the 1990’s, should have a program that gave students the opportunity to experience Assisi, as well as Rome today, so they could see just what truly special places they are. He took the time to develop and design an independent study program that included architecture, painting, music – in short the “greatest hits” that both Assisi and Rome could offer. Students would specialize in a particular area, and earn academic credit through St. Francis Prep, as well as college credit thanks to the partnerships that Worldstrides International Discovery, the tour company organizing the trip, has to offer. The program took three years of dedicated effort on Marino’s part to get off the ground, and this is its innaugural year. Prior to the trip, students will meet five times with Marino, and learn about the various sites they will visit. They will conduct independent research and ultimately declare a specialty, for example, the architecture of the Colosseum, or Julius Caeser, or various Roman Catholic saints. Ultimately, Marino wants students to be witnesses to all that the Prep community shares about Francis. Students will journal an hour a day and the journal will be included as part of their final paper. Prep junior, Kathryn Healy, is looking forward to seeing things she’s learned about already. She’s previously been to Spain and France, but this will be her first time to Italy. Some of the other highlights she’s looking forward to is is being in Assisi, which hasn’t changed much since the time of Francis, and of course, the food! She also is excited to be traveling with a small, focused group of students. Marino and his wife, Healy, and 7 other students will comprise the first group that will travel to Assisi and Rome from June 28th to July 5th, 2017. Dr. Stephen A.
