Street renaming honors Sunnyside

Lily Gavin, the longtime owner of Dazies restaurant in
Sunnyside, was honored with a street renaming on Oct. 21.
Gavin, who died in July at the age of 85, served as the president
of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, was one of the
fi rst women to join the Sunnyside Kiwanis Club, and served on
the board of Sunnyside Shines.
Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer introduced legislation to
rename 40th Street and Queens Boulevard to Lillian “Lily” Gavin
Place. It was passed on March 18.
“Lily Gavin was a Sunnyside icon who touched the lives of virtually
every person in this neighborhood,” Van Bramer said.
“For over four decades, she served this community selfl essly,
championing its businesses and its people.”
Van Bramer was joined at the ceremony by Queens
Borough President Melinda Katz, Senator Mike Gianaris,
Assemblymember Cathy Nolan and Assemblymember Brian
Barnwell.

The Sunnyside Drum Corps performed at the street renaming
