Mayor meets Sikh community leaders in Richmond Hill
BY VICTORIA SCHNEPS
With the election in full heat, I received
a surprise call inviting me to join my
friends in the Sikh community for a
meeting with Mayor Bill de Blasio at the
home of a distinguished member of the
Sikh community in Hollis, Queens.
When I got to the luxurious, opulent
home on a quiet street in northeast
Queens, the mayor was holding
court, sitting in a plush armchair as
one person aft er another shared his or
her appreciation of the mayor’s accomplishments.
Although speaker after speaker
Sukhjinder Singh, Ajit Singh Subhanpur, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Raghbir Singh Subhanpur, Balwinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh.
applauded the mayor for the lowest
crime rate in over 50 years and
the creation of preschool education,
it was clear that they were most grateful
for the mayor’s stance on reducing
stop and frisk and protecting minority
groups while assuring New York
will remain a sanctuary city “no matter
what the cost.”
It was a love fest and the mayor
seemed to enjoy and be energized by
the accolades. Th e sun was shining on
him inside the luxurious home and outside
where they gathered for a group
photo.
