Redbird Tourist Information Center “Redbird” is the term once related to the 7 train, the subway that runs across Queens. Cars were painted deep red to combat graffiti in the 1970s and 1980s. These cars became an iconic symbol of the 7 train, but they were phased out from 2001 to 2003. The last Redbird rode on Nov. 3, 2003. However, one car lives on. The Redbird Tourist Information Center, housed inside a Redbird from the 1950s, is located on the front lawn of Queens Borough Hall, 120-55 Queens Blvd. It is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is handicap-accessible. The center gets the word out about local events – cultural activities, shows and attractions; museums, libraries and parks in and around the many neighborhoods in Queens. Contact [email protected] and visit www.queensbp.org to see a list of attractions and events. Queens Yelp Yelp was started in San Francisco in 2004 to help users discover everything from local restaurants and dentists to day spas and gas stations. Since then, Yelp has spread into cities across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, and Yelpers have written more than 27 million reviews as of March 31, 2012. Yelp Queens helps residents find the best in the borough and rest of NYC through the website and on smartphones. Whether it’s uncovering a neighborhood hidden gem or gushing about an old locals’ favorite, Yelpers are eager to spread the word to their community. As Yelp Queens Community Manager, Jando Shum interacts with locals, both online and off, works with business owners to tell them how they can use free tools on Yelp, writes a weekly newsletter and much more. He believes Yelp has the power to help others discover the best of what’s around them, wherever they are. Address: yelp.com/queens 114 QUENS IN YOUR POCKET • www.itsinqueens.com 114
