It served as an opera house, a courthouse, a jail, and a bank branch before the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts took it over in 1990. Now facilities include a 308-seat concert hall that hosts all kinds of concerts and ethnic shows, a classroom, and a 250- seat outdoor garden. There is also a gallery which exhibits painters from all around the world. Inside scoop: In the 1840s, legendary showman P.T. Barnum was the hall’s impresario and Tom Thumb (aka General Tom Thumb the dwarf) was its star performer. Frederick Douglass also gave a speech there.
