Oratorio Society of Queens Established in 1927, the Oratorio Society of Queens is the borough’s oldest performing cultural organization. The society strives to engage, educate, and uplift the community with live performances of everything from choral masterpieces to popular songs. Its big events are annual holiday and spring concerts. Address: www.queensoratorio.org. Astoria Symphony The Astoria Symphony Orchestra consists of professional and promising young musicians. It is the only professional orchestra that regularly serves Western Queens. Founded in 2002 by conductor Silas Nathaniel Huff, the orchestra plays traditional classical music by legends such as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Brahms, but it also champions modern American music, regularly premiering and commissioning new works. In fact, the orchestra has performed more than a dozen world premieres since its founding. Inside scoop: The Astoria Symphony is the flagship ensemble of the Astoria Music Society, which includes the Lost Dog New Music Ensemble, a chamber music series, and the Astoria Symphonic Choir, a volunteer ensemble which performs with the orchestra and on its own. Consisting of a full orchestra with string and wind sections and a musical director, the orchestra offers various concerts around Queens every year.
