Richmond Hill Parades
Two of the most colorful outdoor activities in New York City are
the annual Phagwah and Diwali parades in Richmond Hill. Long
a middle class residential area, the neighborhood has welcomed
a steady stream of Hindu immigrants from India, Guyana, and
Trinidad and Tobago since the 1980s. The demographics make
the main strip, Liberty Avenue, the ideal place for these two
Hindu-based rituals.
The Phagwah-Holi Parade attracts as many as 100,000 revelers
who sing, ride floats, and throw powder, perfume, and water at
each other in a playful, good-natured fashion. After rolling down
a jam-packed Liberty Avenue, the procession heads to Smokey
Oval Park, where drumming, chanting, and dancing fill the air
until it gets dark.
