BY ANTHONY GIUDICE [email protected]\ @A_GIUDICEREPORT The Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG) soccer teams had a great weekend as a pair of teams faced off against one another in the New York City Cup Finals, and other teams competed in cup fi nals. It was an all-BWG aff air on Saturday, June 10, as the BWG 2008 team played the BWG 2007 team in the New York City Cup Finals. It was an entertaining game and both teams played well, but the older boys came away with the victory and bragging rights. On Sunday, June 11, the BWG 2001 team faced Manhattan Soccer Club (MSC) in the ENY State Cup Final at HBC in Long Island. Aft er failing to convert on many great scoring opportunities, BWG lost 1-0 as MSC was able to score in the waning seconds of the second overtime. On the same day, the BWG 17/18 Pre-Academy team defeated the Cedar Stars to win their league. They are now headed to the National Tournament in Indiana next month. After finishing in first place in the Northeast USSF Developmental Academy, the BWG 16 team received their playoff opponents. They will be grouped with Sockers FC from Chicago, Seattle Sounders FC (Major League Soccer), and the New York Red Bulls (MLS). This is the fourth consecutive year the team has made the US Academy playoff s. SPORTS Monsignor McClancy HS senior selected in MLB draft BY ANTHONY GIUDICE [email protected] @A_GIUDICEREPORT A fl eet-footed senior from Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School in East Elmhurst became Queens’ highest Major League Baseball (MLB) draft pick in the last 21 years. As reported by the New York Post, Quentin Holmes, 17, was selected in the second round (64th overall) by the Cleveland Indians in the threeday MLB draft on Monday, June 12. The 6-foot 2-inch center fi elder has committed to attend Mississippi State University in the fall. “I am extremely blessed and thankful to have been selected by the Indians,” Holmes said on his Instagram page. “Thanks to everyone who supported and rooted for me along the way!” According to the Post, as a high schooler, Holmes was ranked No. 33 by MLBPipeline.com and No. 50 by Baseball America, and some even projected the speedster to be a fi rstround pick in the draft . For Monsignor McClancy, Holmes hit .420 with 18 extra-base hits, seven home runs, 33 runs scored, and 22 stolen bases in 23 tries this year, the Post reported. Over his high school career Holmes has earned a plethora of accolades including a spot on the 2016 Perfect Game All-American Classic team, according to perfectgame. org, as well as the 2016- 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year award. Aside from his blazing speed, scouts believe Holmes has the potential to be a top-tier leadoff hitter in the MLB, when he eventually makes it to the show.
