If he doesn’t fulfi ll his NBA dream, he’ll go to Europe. But Coburn almost surely won’t turn out to be another cautionary tale of a city hoopster who put all of his eggs in the basketball basket and when it didn’t pan out, his life went Humpty Dumpty. Coburn, who will play his college ball next year at St. Bonaventure, knows the value of education. ROBBINS’ NEST by Lenn Robbins 4/25/2016 coburn1.mother, Dawn, is a physician’s assistant. It’s always been books before ball for Coburn. “I don’t want to be known only as a basketball player,” Coburn said. “Even the greatest players of all time were done playing in their 40s. You still have your whole life ahead of you. I want to have a career after my basketball career.” Coburn intends to major in biology, not basket weaving, at St. Bonaventure. He had several offers from mid-major programs but the small Catholic University (enrollment about 2,000) which borders > Absolutely Free Student Checking •No minimum balance •No per check fee •No monthly maintenance fee > Free unlimited ATM transactions at NYCB locations > Free VISA®CheckCard > Free Direct Deposit > Free On-line Banking with Free Bill Pay† > 24 Hour Bank by Phone > Convenience •Over 140 locations in NY and NJ •Extended branch banking hours •Supermarket banking •7 day-a-week banking at many locations > Pre-Paid Solutions •VISA® Gift Card •Pre-Paid Long Distance •Pre-Paid MasterCardTM •Pre-Paid Wireless Service •MetroCards His father, Lance, is a physician specializing in internal medicine. Member FDIC Equal Housing Lender the Allegheny River in Olean, New York, offered the perfect environment for Coburn. “The whole atmosphere there just felt right,” said Coburn. “I can see myself there. They’re getting new equipment and facilities. The campus isn’t cramped, like in the city. There’s space. I fell in love with it. It feels like you’re part of a family there. Everyone is on the same page.” For those unfamiliar with St. Bonaventure, it has a storied basketball history. Bob Lanier, one of the best big men in NBA history, and forward Andrew Nicholson of the Orlando Magic, are two of the greats. Recently Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt, one of the sharpest minds in the Atlantic 10, has begun a tradition of developing outstanding guards. Jaylen Adams last year teamed with Marcus Posley, who scored 47 points in an A-10 tournament game in March. Posley has completed his eligibility, paving the way for Coburn and Adams to form the next great St. Bonaventure guard tandem. “Freshman season I want to come in and be a big-time player,” Coburn said. “It doesn’t matter how. I can make an impact on defense. I can hustle. Coach Schmidt has a great understanding of player development. He’s already proved that to me by calling me all the time.” Schmidt might fi nd he has a more developed player than the one he signed. Coburn has been working out regularly with his cousin, Sean Crawford, a former Fairfi eld star who played over seasons last season before suffering a knee injury. “His work ethic really is amazing,” Crawford said. “We actually worked out Sunday night. I was really amazed. Before I left to play in Turkey, I would always beat him easy. Now, his body’s changed. Now he’s playing above the rim. He takes half a step and he’s dunking.” Crawford has seen the transformation more clearly than anyone else. Coburn was a soccer player through fi fth grade. In eighth grade Coburn started shadowing Crawford, even visiting him at Fairfi eld for one summer school semester. “When he left he sent me a long text message that I saved on my computer,” Crawford said. “He said he was going to shoot 800 hundred shots a day.” Basketball had replaced soccer. “When I leave college, I want to have my degree,” Coburn said. “And I want the fans there to say, ‘He was a great kid who played his hardest every night.” 1Student Banking is available for personal accounts only and is free of maintenance and activity fees. 2Student Checking Accounts with a Visa® debit card are automatically enrolled in the Even >more Rewards Program.
