Allora: Bay Terrace’s newest Italian eatery BY PEARL ADLER Th e Bay Terrace Shopping Center has a new restaurant and it’s a bonus to the community. Allora, on the upper level of the center, off ers “home cooked” food from their Italian kitchen and bar, called an Italian rustic bistro. Th e food, prepared under the direction of award-winning chef Steve Koutsoumbaris, is a standout -- as is the environment. Th e warm stunning setting has well spaced tables; the enormous bar has a TV tuned in to the latest sports news. Owner Steve Menexis has reinvented the space that was previously Tony Roma’s restaurant with a half-million dollar renovation. He even enlarged the outside terrace and for privacy added 50 trees to give his diners the feel of being in another world (maybe Rome?). Certainly, the food is as good as any meal you can get in Italy. All the pastas are made from scratch in the Allora kitchen, as are the sauces and sausages. Th e fi sh is brought in daily. From their two wood fi red ovens, Allora provides delicious pizza with crispy crusts smothered in tasty sauces and toppings. My favorite pizza was the Allora supreme, covered in their home made Italian sausage, roasted peppers and grilled onions. Although it was enough for four people to share, I could have eaten the Detroit-style square pizza myself. Because all the pastas are made in house daily, we decided to sample two of their pasta dishes. One was the four-cheese blend in a rustic tomato sauce with creme fraiche. Delicious! Th en the gigli covered in wild mushrooms, yellow and green squash with sundried tomato sprinkled with fresh herbs. Wonderful! I had my favorite, grilled octopus, knowing that the chef comes from the famous MP Taverna, where that is one of their signature dishes. It lived up to the reputation of a superb dish. Th ere are multiple choices of salads and chicken, veal and fi sh entrees. Try it -- you too will love it! Allora is located at 210-35 26th Ave., upper level of the Bay Terrace Shopping Center, in Bayside. Th ey’re open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner; catering and home delivery available. Th e restaurant is handicapped accessible. To make reservations, call 718-225-5672 or email info@ allorakitchen.com. dining out
