Braunstein as Man of the Year. Local businessman and longtime parade volunteer John Ottulich has received the Community Service Award. For years, Ottulich organized the traditional 11 a.m. pre-parade Interfaith Service, to be held this year at the Community Church of Little Neck. “I will be volunteering at the hot dog tent this year,” he quipped. During the year, parade volunteers entertain local elderly veterans; hold an Art and Essay contest for area schoolchildren; decorate the parade route and the graves of veterans buried in Douglaston with flags. Memorial Day starts with a pre-dawn set up and features events before, during and after the parade, from a veterans’ breakfast to a free USAF 70th birthday concert by the rock band, The Blue Aces. The band will be introduced by USAF Gen. Edward W. Thomas, Jr., who will also swear in a number of enlistees during the parade. “Volunteers make all this possible,” said parade co-chair J. Douglas Montgomery. “Rain or shine it’s always a great day for young and old. I hope everyone will come out and join us for the parade and closing celebration.” The parade marches west on Northern Blvd, from Jayson Ave. in Great Neck to the Divine Wisdom Academy schoolyard, between Alameda Ave. and 245th St. in Douglaston.
