Terrace on the Park celebrates its dream makeover
BY MCGEORGE SORENSEN
One of Queens’ most iconic landmarks
and event venues has completed a fi veyear,
$9 million renovation that’s made it
perfect to a “T.”
Terrace on the Park, located in the
T-shaped building that was the Port
Authority pavilion at the 1964-65 World’s
Fair, has been given a state-of-the-art
makeover, updating its decor and infrastructure
to accommodate many more
weddings and other celebrations in the
years to come.
“Th is project has involved improvements
in nearly every inch of Terrace
on the Park, from the front doors to our
Rooft op deck and gardens,” said Bruno
M. Marques, Terrace on the Park general
manager. “We have undertaken this work
to preserve the heritage of this incredible
piece of New York’s history, and in
doing so, we have made Terrace on the
Park new again for new generations of
New Yorkers, with a vision for the future
that is just as big and breathtaking as our
views.”
Marques, Terrace on the Park co-managers
Jimmy Kaloidis and George Makkos
and other dignitaries celebrated the project’s
completion with a ribbon-cutting
ceremony on Sept. 27 held on the newly
renovated roof and former heliport where
Th e Beatles landed en route to their historic
1965 concert at Shea Stadium.
Terrace on the Park opened soon aft er
completion of the 1964-65 World’s Fair,
and the former Port Authority pavilion
was transformed into one of Queens’
premier gathering places for weddings,
proms, bar/bat mitzvahs, corporate
events and other special events.
Almost every inch of Terrace on the
Park, including the parkside gardens, were
improved during the extensive project.
Th e Penthouse, which features 360-degree
vistas, now has an even grander feel with
the addition of height-enhancing coff ered
ceilings, handcraft ed plaster panels, custom
built bars, LED lighting and designer,
contemporary carpeting.
Th e Rooft op vista is now lined with
two-tone stonework and landscaping,
with LED lighting, and a new wedding
pergola, off ering a perfect panoramic
backdrop for couples looking for a truly
memorable place to tie the knot.
New zebra-wood panels, sconces and
LED lighting have been installed in Th e
Grand Ballroom, with similar upgrades
made to the Crystal and Regency ballrooms.
Th roughout the interior of the structure,
visitors will fi nd custom carpets,
drapes and polished granite stonework.
Terrace on the Park also installed new
fi ber optic wifi service and an integrated
video/public address system ideal for
multimedia presentations and simulcasts.
Th e project also included the creation
of a brand-new space, the Promenade
Level, just below the Ballroom Level on
the building’s 14th story. It was formerly
the “Drinks Around the World” lounge
during the World’s Fair.
Crews brought the long-dormant
space back to life with the creation
of the Lotus and Marquis suites, two
reception and meeting spaces that can
each accommodate up to 400 guests.
Th e suites are outfi tted with contemporary
textured wall panels, custom bars,
mosaic tile fl ooring and window treatments.
Terrace on the Park, through executive
chef Jose Cerqueira (a fi nalist on
“Iron Chef America”), has also expanded
the catering department to develop
a larger portfolio of menu options for
event and wedding planners to consider.
Th e team can customize menus to meet
every taste and dietary consideration.
