New care center for new moms at LIJ Forest Hills
Members of Long Island Jewish Forest Hills
Hospital cut the ribbon on its new post-partum
unit on Jan. 16.
In 2017, LIJ Forest Hills converted three
underutilized beds in the hospital’s inpatient
pediatric unit to beds for maternity patients. The
$4 million expansion was part of the $8.2 million
overhaul of OB/GYN services at the hospital, which
moves the entire department to the third floor and
features 23 maternity beds – 11 single occupancy
and six two-patient rooms.
To accommodate the expansion, LIJ Forest Hills
moved its radiology department to a state-of-the-art
imaging center.
Costing approximately $3.2 million, the Imaging
Center is housed in a space previously used by the
hospital’s outpatient clinic on the hospital’s second
floor, which is accessible by a ramp walkway on
102nd Street. The center provides diagnostic services
such as low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans,
digital X-rays, ultrasounds and interventional
radiology procedures such as biopsies and drainages.
In 2017, the hospital delivered 1,948 babies. The
hospital operates a nursery and a Level 2 neonatal
intensive care unit to care for babies born at greater
than 32 weeks gestation or who are recovering from
more serious conditions.
In 2017, LIJ Forest Hills earned Baby Friendly
designation – the 18th facility in New York State
– an international award given by UNICEF and
the World Health Organization for improving
breastfeeding rates while encouraging mother-infant
bonding.
