AIRPORT VOICE, APRIL 2019 29
to Senior Director’s Success
BY JESSICA MILITELLO
Last year Marisa Von Wieding was promoted
to the role of senior director of LaGuardia
Gateway Partners after a 28-year career in
aviation that started as a part-time job cleaning
airplanes while she was in college. As
someone who traveled through many different
roles to where she is now, Von Wieding’s journey
is an impressive example of determination
and an unrelenting work ethic.
As senior director, Von Wieding holds many
responsibilities that include overseeing operations
on new facilities. Presently, a new building
is currently in progress. Every day brings
new challenges, which is one of the traits she
enjoys most about her job along with the idea
that in this fast-paced environment, “no day is
alike.”
For Von Wieding hard work and challenging
situations are what contributed to her success
and helped her to grow.
“I moved up the corporate ladder from the
ground up,” said Von Wieding. “Once you start
with an airline, it’s very hard to give it up, it
becomes part of your DNA and it’s something
that you don’t want to leave.”
Long before Von Wieding was overseeing
operations, as a college student she applied
for a job at an airline company called Reservations,
but she didn’t get the position. From
that rejection she ended up earning a position
for Pan Am in operations, where she
was cleaning airplanes in a full-time role
in addition to attending school full-time to
earn her bachelor’s degree in business and
marketing. From that point she learned she
enjoyed the atmosphere of the airline industry
and continued working her way up in the
industry.
For Von Wieding, this unrelenting work ethic
is part of what got her to where she is today.
I love what I do and I think my passion
comes through, said Von Wieding. “If you work
hard and believe in what you do and love what
you do, I think you’ll be recognized. Throughout
my career, I’ve been afforded so many different
opportunities, but the common theme
is I never looked for it, I just worked hard and
tried to excel at what I was doing.”
