What To Do When You
Don’t Know What To Do By Cassandra Angelic Wilkins
The end of high school and beginning
of college is an exciting, scary and
confusing time for many young
people. It’s hard to know exactly what
profession you want to pursue in life,
but college demands you to make that
decision. It can be intimidating, especially when
so many people end up building a career in a field
that they didn’t study in college. Whether you’re
a freshman going to college for the first time or
you’re a junior at a crossroads, here are a few tips
to help find the right path for you.
Ask Questions
Asking questions can help with choosing
what you’re interested in. Asking questions of
those around you, potential employers, and even
people who seem like they’re enjoying life a bit
too much. Their exact job may not be for you, but
you could consider looking into similar career
choices. Asking people how they were able to
get to their current job can not only expose you
to new job ideas, but give you a path you could
roughly follow to the job of your choice.
Turn your hobby into a
career
Your hobby can become one that’s profitable.
Something you do for fun, you can get paid to
teach others how to do it. Or have a company
pay for you to carry out this hobby for them. For
example, if a person knits, they can run a knitting
class or even get paid to knit things for people.
Career Fairs
Believe it or not, career fairs are some of
the best places to get inspired for the future.
They host a variety of companies with people
representing jobs that may not commonly be
advertised. You can ask questions that are too
specific to be answered through a search engine.
It also allows you to set up appointments to visit
a company without the pressure of having to
apply for a job or make some sort of commitment
to the company.
Meeting people and
talking openly about
their job
Talking about work can often seem taboo
because people like to leave work at work.
However, a simply inquiry can help give one a
better scope of what others are doing. A person
can be an editor for youtubers and work from
home, another person could be a scuba diver
who leaves home for months at a time.
Pick a sector and
create a job
Sometimes you know what field you want
to work in, but you don’t know how you fit into
things. Besides interning you can create a
job. If you know your good at something some
companies will hire you to carry out that skill. If
you have an idea to do something differently you
can pitch it and see where the opportunity takes
you.
No choice is permanent
Remember that you can always choose
something different. Don’t feel tied down to the
job you chose. It may not feel immediate when
you feel like this isn’t the job for you. It can take
time for the excitement of new environment to
die down. The rose colored glasses come off to
reveal the flaws that may not have been apparent
when you first started. When that happens it’s
time to move on.
Take A Tour
Many jobs allow tours of their facilities. It
gives you a time to familiarize yourself with the
side of business that may not be known to public.
While this does not provide a full picture of what
to expect if you start working their, it gives you
mental image of what might be expected of you.
Process of Elimination
Being able to narrow down your choices always
help with the decision making process. Knowing
that you may not be interested in working real
estate allows you more time to look into other
places. Determining your likes and dislikes will
help when your stuck with choosing being a
gardener, if you know don’t like being outside,
it may not be the job for you. Your major doesn’t
determine your life. Some people may find a job
using the major they chose, while others utilized
the fact that they received a degree.
Be Open
Don’t judge a book by its cover. You could end
up somewhere you’ve never considered to be
an option. A certain major or internship could
change your perspective and have you engaging
in a entirely different field of study. It’s great if
you utilize the major you got your degree in, but if
you don’t that’s great too.
