Dormin’
on a Budget:
How to deck out
your dorm on
the cheap
BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK They say a clean home is a happy home. Well, so is a well-decorated
one.
Dorming can be tricky. Sometimes, your living quarters are the
size of a (comically large) shoebox; others, it’s a massive suite in
which you co-exist with up to 10 others. Making your living space
look the way that you want it is key to living happy -- and making your
dorm an ideal home away from home.
However, you don’t always have to break the bank to have a dope looking
dorm room. Here are some tips and tricks on how to ball out your college
bedroom on a budget:
Bring From Home
We know. This one feels the least exciting, but it is easily the least expensive
(in most cases, it should be free, unless you have to slip a sibling a few bucks
to “borrow” his or her favorite movie poster). Take your favorite pillow, or
maybe a (not-so-valuable) family heirloom from the living room that will bring
a little bit of your home home to your new home. Pack up a few picture frames
and maybe even take your desk lamp -- just be sure to leave some furniture
home for when you’re back for winter break.
Discount Deals and Back to School
Sales
Everyone loves a trip to the mall, and those sales aren’t just for parents.
Stores like HomeGoods, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s are chock full of discount
decor for your dorm room. Be it a unique frame, cool and comfortable bedsets
or just any old simple accent, any of those stores will have what you need.
Target, too.
DIY
Hear us out here. Creating your own decor can be fun -- and it’ll guarantee
its originality, especially in a common space. Have a little fun at home with
your family or friends before you leave for college. Have all the girls over for a
paint night and create your own “Best Friend” frames, or have the boys over
for a cool woodworking project you can take on the road to college.
Make it Your Own
Whether you come packed and ready to decorate, or are looking to
personalize as you go along, just make sure that, above all else, you make
your dorm room your own.
