Cheap summer
activities
BY JAIME DEJESUS
Looking to have some fun with friends or a
date after class or your summer job, but
don’t want to spend too much cash you
don’t have ? Fear not. The five boroughs
have several great places to go that don’t
involve spending too much loot on food,
drinks and entertainment. Here are a few.
Coney Island
This has always been a fixture and for good
reason. There’s so much to do. Daring souls
can enjoy the world famous Cyclone, the newer
Thunderbolt, the classic Spook-a-Rama and the
New Astro Tower.
Want to enjoy a ride on the mellow side? Take a
seat on the Wonder Wheel and enjoy the wonderful
view. Of course, if you’re a beach bum you can
enjoy that too.
The sports fanatic can see tomorrow’s stars
today at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The tickets are cheap. And if you want to stuff your
face, there’s plenty of places for that too.
Staten Island Zoo/
Bronx Zoo
Who needs to go all the way to beautiful San
Diego when you have one of the best zoos right in
the Bronx? It’s massive, daunting and wonderful.
You may be overwhelmed going on a hot day, but
it’s totally worth spending the day. Not only do you
get to see all types of wildlife, but you get your
workout on in a scenic setting.
Want something that will only take up a few
hours of your time? The Staten Island Zoo is a
perfectly suitable replacement.
The Bell House at
Industry City
Sunset Park is booming thanks to Industry City.
One of its seasonal specials is the Bell House
Summer Series, a music and comedy event series
running from June to October. Tickets for some
acts are as cheap as $10 with drinks as cheap as
$4 on certain nights.
Sunset Fridays will feature a free weekly
Happy Hour Event with DJ performances,
bocce ball tournaments, drink specials
and more. Enjoy the beautiful view and
weather while you still can.
Staten Island
FunPark
The athlete in you would be wise
to check out this intimate but fun
venue. It includes a pretty long and
challenging mini-golf course, batting
cages for novices and pros, and of
course, go karts. Not a bad time for
a few bucks. Many of these types
of establishments have shuttered
their gates so it’s refreshing to have
a place that still offers good ol’
fashioned fun that forces you to put
down the tech for an hour or so.
