Student Voter Registration Day
The power’s in your hands.
New York City on Monday, May 21 celebrated its first-ever citywide
Student Voter Registration Day, which aims to help register all
eligible students who are 18 or will turn 18 by November 6.
“Young people across the nation have been speaking up loudly
for their values. To sustain real change, we must bring that activism
to the ballot box,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Our first-ever citywide student
voter registration day will help more young people get involved in the civic
process and make our democracy stronger.”
In Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Fort Hamilton High School participated.
“Now more than ever it’s important that young people get registered and
exercise their right to vote. New York consistently ranks as one of the worst
voting turnout states in the nation and that’s where the youth vote can make
a significant impact on our future,” said Councilmember Justin Brannan, who
stopped by Fort Hamilton, the auditorium of which he said is where he lost an
iteration of a local Battle of the Bands as a teen. “It is my hope that these new
voters will lead the way in rejuvenating voter participation in our city.”
In Manhattan, Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped by the Manhattan Hunter
Science High School to celebrate.
“Young people across the nation have been speaking up loudly for their
values. To sustain real change, we must bring that activism to the ballot box,”
said Hizzoner. “Our first-ever citywide student voter registration day will help
more young people get involved in the civic process and make our democracy
stronger.”
The day is a part of the city’s Civics for All initiative announced earlier this
year.
