Safety concerns became
real when more workers were
not getting to work. After
weeks of the shutdown, the
FAA was greatly impacted,
and slowdowns at regional
NY airports created a safety

able to handle fl ights did the
President call for an end to
the shutdown. The end to the
drain on airlines fortunes due
to the shutdown temporarily
came to an end.

The major JFK Airport runway
construction to 13L 31R was all designed,
discussed in many airport meetings
and all set to begin April 1 lasting until
November. However, upon presentation
by the Port Authority to Kaamco, many
questions were raised, and now the actual
project is being reviewed by all. The big
question on the minds of airlines and
all who service aircraft is the difficulty
and perhaps big tie-ups in the case of
bad weather. This could be thunder
storms, icing, flooding or snow. Any of
conditions could virtually stop many
operations. Because of the high number
of daily international flights the airlines
are very concerned about planes having
no where to go when arriving from
overseas creating a critical situation
where passengers would be on board
waiting until movement could continue
after weather abated. After the Grayson
storm last year, everyone is worried
about operations issues crippling travel.
Port shared details about the
engineering, weather modeling and the
timing that is essential to resurface
the runway and nearby roadways. But,
some Kaamco members have called
for a delay, a reschedule and others
for a remapping to mitigate potential
problems. At the last meeting Port had
assured the community that it would
do what is right and responsible for the
community. Several meetings are being
held to collaborate and resolve this
issue. The resolution remains to be seen.
Time is ticking away as the beginning of
construction nears.
