Skynet like LGA RoboCop
Once just imagination, robots now a reality at airports
Robots are beginning to be seen
in the area airports. While not the
extent of Skynet in Terminator
movie,robotic use is still minimal
but the two initial LGA & JFK
deployments are indicative of the
future.
LaGuardia Gateway Partners which
is rebuilding Terminal B at LaGuardia
Airport has been using a robot for
security since October of 2018. This robot,
supplied by Knightscope, is loaded with
cameras and other sensors to enhance
security coverage in the lower level of the
arrivals at Terminal B.
Even though the robot is
genderless, it goes by the name
“B-3PO”. “She” can been seen
moving all along the terminal exit
area making all kids of sounds and
attracting the stares and eliciting
smiles from all kinds of people.
B-3PO is the application of Geofence,
a GPS, technology. “She” has capabilities
that include video surveillance, the
ability to broadcast recorded and live
messages in the event of an incident and
the ability to ensure it avoids anything
or anyone in her path.
LaGuardia Gateway Partners,
which operates the terminal, wouldn’t

say how much it’s paying for the blueand
white machines, but Knightscope
says it typically rents the droids out
for between $6,500 and $8,300 a month.
“We do have the opportunity to
test a lot of different things, use
this terminal as an incubator to see
what makes sense to bring to the
new terminal,” said Tracy Sandford,
LGP’s director of marketing”
Another robot is employed by
ABM cleaning services. This is the
f loor scrubber known as “Amry”.
This bot can be seen roaming
the floors of JFKIAT alone and
efficiently. Sometimes however,
this machine needs a little coaxing
by her handlers but it is a sight

taxi and GoldenTouch bus areas in
