Coney bus
routes on
the move
BY JULIANNE MCSHANE
Transportation offi cials temporarily
re-routed three bus
routes in Coney Island to accommodate
an ongoing construction
project at the intersection
of Surf Avenue
and W. 22nd Street, offi cials
announced this week.
The Sheepshead Bay-bound
B36 bus and the Manhattanbound
X28 and X38 buses will
now turn from Surf Avenue
onto W. 24th Street, rather
than onto W. 22nd Street, until
workers fi nish a drainage and
electrical wiring project in
the middle of W. 22nd Street in
a few weeks, according to reps
from the Metropolitan Transit
Authority and Department
of Transportation.
The B36 bus will then turn
right onto Mermaid Avenue
at W. 24th Street, and the X28
and X38 buses will turn right
onto Neptune Avenue at W.
24th Street, according to MTA
spokesman Shams Tarek.
The change came after Coney
Islanders alleged that city
offi cials endangered locals’
lives by directing the buses to
temporarily turn onto W. 22nd
Street while workers undertook
both a nine-month-long

City investigating after disabled student left on school bus
BY JULIANNE MCSHANE
City offi cials are investigating
an allegation that teachers at a
Coney Island school last week
left an 8-year-old physically
disabled student alone on a
school bus after he fell asleep,
and failed to inform the boy’s
mother that he was missing, a
spokeswoman at the Department
of Education confi rmed.
The boy’s mom said the incident
amounted to a breakdown
in her trust in the
city’s schools and its employees
who are charged with
keeping kids safe.
“They failed my son, and
they failed me, because I
dropped my son off in their
hands to make sure he’s safe,”
said Coney Island resident
Jennifer Smith. “For them to
leave my son behind, it has
changed my whole feelings
towards how the school
system is run.”
Smith said the incident occurred
April 4 when her son,
Blake Everett — who she said
has a leg length discrepancy
that impairs his mobility and
requires him to be accompanied
by an aide at all times —
joined his classmates from PS
329 on a fi eld trip to the Cobble
Hill Theater.
But Everett’s aide rode back
