Cinemas. The Forest Hills moviehouse is the
oldest continuously operated independent
theater in Queens. It began as a 1,500
seat single screen theater in 1925 called
Metropolis. In the early ‘60s the theater
was bought by New York art exhibitor who
renamed it Cinema Art. He planned to use
it as the Queens leg of his art cinema circuit
that included the Cinema Village in lower
Manhattan and the D. W. Griffith on the
Upper East Side. It became a twin theatre
in the ‘70s, and the name was eventually
shortened to Cinemart. Today, the cinema
features five screens with a Dolby Digital
sound system. The newest addition is a lounge
area with a working fireplace where guests can
enjoy food and drinks before their movie.

It’s a fun blast from the past. The New York
Hall of Science (NYSCI), founded during the
famous 1964 World’s Fair, turned into the
center for New Yorkers to partake in hands-on

and creativity. NYSCI offers professional
development for teachers, produces curricula
and resources for classrooms, and studies
how technology and play affect how we learn.
