Poly overtakes Fontbonne in double OT BY JIM DOLAN Poly Prep 62 Fontbonne 57 It was a standing-room-only gym when the Blue Devils hosted the Bonnies this past Friday evening on Poly Prep’s annual alumni fundraising Oasis Night. There was no question that this non-league game was going to be a competitive contest as 11-1 Fontbonne squared o against undefeated 12-0 Poly Prep. However, given the apparently even match-up, an unexpected lopsided beginning to the evening’s game came as surprise to the partisan Poly crowd. Right out of the gate, the Bonnies were unstoppable from the perimeter as Meghan Glynn scored 12 points, igniting her team to a 24-11 lead in the fi rst quarter. Re-grouping in the second quarter, the Blue Devils rallied to narrow the Bonnies’ lead to 30-25 by the end of the half. Fontbonne fi nished the third quarter with a slim 34-31 lead as Poly’s high scoring (21 points apiece) duet of Shanniah Wright and Maggie White began to get on track for the second half of the game. Then, with 9.2 seconds le on the clock, Wright’s free throw made the score 50-47, which forced Fontbonne Coach Steve Oliver to call a timeout, urging his team to set up for a fi nal three-point shot to tie the game. Katie Marquardt came through and found an open Emily Lind who landed the tying basket to send the game into overtime at 50-50. With 4.7 seconds le in the fi rst overtime period and down by three points, Marquardt stole Poly’s Photo by Jim Dolan inbounds pass and made the subsequent three-point shot that would tie the game again at 56-56 to force a second overtime period. Going into the fi nal period, Poly’s defense stepped up to dominate the boards as Amaari Williams and Wright pulled down rebounds, denying Fontbonne a second chance for possession. In the end, Poly’s defense made the di erence as the Bonnies were held to just one point in the fi nal overtime period in the Blue Devils’ 62-57 hard fought win. BY ROBERT CAVALIERE The Cardinals won the toss and set the tempo for this confrontation between the Parkville Youth Organization Chiefs and Cardinals, with Havis “Shot Gun” Wade calling the plays. Taylan Gomes-Hendricks busted through the Chiefs’ line for their fi rst, fi rst down. Then Wade hit Frankie Smith with a bullet pass for another fi rst down. Gomes-Hendricks continued the good fortune with another fi rst down. They got close to the end zone but no cigar. The Cards had control of the ball for the entire fi rst quarter and part of second but failed to score. “Shot Gun” Wade got sacked by Isaiah Chico and then a pass attempt got picked o . The Chiefs took control and on their third play Dylan “Postman” Bove hit Solomon “the Warrior” Mercado to draw fi rst blood. Sami Sarsour went in for the point a er putting the Chiefs up, 7-zip. The Cards began another brutal trek down fi eld and Xavier Acevedo got them as close as the three-yard line for a fi rst down. “Shot Gun” Wade bullied his way up the middle, putting the Cards on the boards, 7- 6 Chiefs. The Chiefs took possession and, on the kicko , the “Postman” made a rapid delivery to the end zone. Then, Bove hit “the Warrior” with the point a er pass, making it 14- 6, Chiefs. Joseph Zreiket received the kicko for the Cards and went out of bounds on the 20-yard line. Wade gave Acevedo the ball and he ran 30 yards for a touchdown. They failed to get the point a er, putting the tally at 14- 12, Chiefs. The Chiefs began their drive and on the second play fumbled the ball. Gabriel Avella of the Cards made the recovery. The Cards were unable to make good on the recovery because Joseph Negron and Isaiah Chico of the Chiefs applied some aggressive pressure which caused the Cards to lose control. Chiefs quarterback Bove gave Sarsour the green light on the second down and entered sacred ground. Bove threw a spiral to Mercado for the point a er, making it 21-12, Chiefs. “Shot Gun” Wade of the Cards on his second play ended in the end zone for a touchdown. Sarsour got the point a er, bringing the tally to 27-12, Chiefs. Defense took over for both squads. Chico, Steven Navarro, Luka “Bone Crusher” Tsituashuili, Sarsour and Mercado of the Chiefs held the line with sweat and guts. Xavier Acevedo, Muhammed Dola, Michael “Hammer Time” Devito, Murad “Pit Bull” Lamidi, Zreiket, Tarek Mohammed and George Cogliati displayed a fi erce, determined force against the Chiefs’ drive. The fi nal score of the game came from the Cardinals. A Hail Mary pass from “Shot Gun” Wade found its target in the hands of Brandon Diaz. Zreiket tried to kick a two-point conversion but the Chiefs had Andrew “A-Train” Echevarria on hand to make a splendid block. The ballgame ended with the Chiefs going home with the 27-18 victory.
