Newly-elected Congressmember Hakeem Jefferies took an opportunity to complain that the NYPD is making too many low-level marijuana arrests in New York City. He hinted that this may be an indication that Mayor de Blasio is really not serious about following through on his campaign promises to assure the NYPD scrupulously honors individual citizens civil rights. He stated that the “new administration promised change but instead we get more of the same.” That is not true. The number of arrests for low-level marijuana possession has dropped and NYPD policy is not to force a suspect to display small amounts of pot in order to make an arrest. Governor Cuomo has proposed decriminalizing possession of 15 grams or less of pot whether hidden or in plain view, which would take this controversy and its attendant political baggage off the table. It would be nice to let police offi cers perform their duties instead of being pawns in a political chess game. The line of march was one of the longest in years with literally thousands of spectators lining Third Avenue enjoying the bands and cheering the marchers. The Gold Star Mothers were the grand marshals. I can hardly think of a more worthy group. These moms who wear the distinctive gold star pin have given to the defense of our nation and protection of our freedoms their sons and daughters. They could not give more. Always honor and respect these moms. Our elected offi - cials including Congressmember Michael Grimm, State Senator Marty Golden, Assemblymembers Nicole Malliotakis and Alec Brook-Krasny as well as Councilmember Vincent Gentile all participated. So did the Kings County Conservative Party and Bay Ridge Democrats. Domenic Recchia had individuals handing out campaign literature as they attempted to sign people up to vote. Considering the overwhelmingly positive reception the Conservative Party received, the liberal Recchia group may have found the wrong parade to conduct a registration drive. Live and learn. *** The Conservative Party’s 31st consecutive POW/MIA ceremony held at Look Out Point at 81st Street and Shore Road was very well attended. The party for the past several years has been joined by the St. Anselm’s Boy Scout troop which boasts one of the largest numbers of Eagle Scouts of any troops in the nation. This year two Eagle Scouts were in attendance. There are 1,642 individuals who remain missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. This is six fewer than last year due to successful efforts in identifying the remains of a handful of individuals that had been located and returned. The process of identifying remains is painstaking and can take many months. The last soldier identifi ed was Captain Douglas Ferguson, USAF, shot down over Laos on December 30, 1969.His remains were recovered on April 13, 2013 and identifi ed on February 14, 2014. *** We are seeing more and more homes in Dyker Heights enclosed in stainless steel bars on all fl oors and heavy stainless steel security doors. I fi nd this trend extremely disturbing. The community remains as safe as ever. The new protections seem to appear only on recently purchased homes and refl ect a different cultural view on security. Homes like this have existed in great numbers in the Sunset Park area for many years and are really not positive additions to any community. The homes themselves look horrible and, worse yet, they make the whole area around them appear trashy. And, frankly, instead of offering additional security protection, they more than likely attract unwanted attention from potential burglars who fi gure these homes contain the greatest number of valuables. Community outreach by civic and government groups as well as elected offi cials explaining the disadvantages of the heavy security from both an aesthetic as well as security perspective is necessary, or we will be confronted with large sections of our community looking like safety deposit box holding cells. Double decked headline to fit alloted space Mayor Bloomberg continues to push a fantasy that, if he had more power, everything would be okay. When so much is at stake, it is not the time to make political statements or play games”. munity protec- Let us never forget BY BRIAN KIERAN BY KASSAR If there is anyone who remains in our city who thought the New York City Council and our mayor were in touch with the priorities of New Yorkers, the recent passage of the fivecent paper and plastic food and retail shopping bag tax should end that confusion. In my opinion, it is not about the 15 to 50 more dollars you might need to spend each year, although that should matter. Nor is it about the scientific reports that have shown that reusing these bags is less than sanitary. It is about a supposed representative body elected by the people calling itself a City Council believing this is what the majority of New Yorkers wanted. It is almost though the 28 who voted for this bill are living on another planet. The imposition of this five-cent tax reflects an extreme environmental agenda being forced upon millions of our city’s residents. It is another message to New Yorkers who consider our government out of touch that things are only going to get worse. And it is a reminder to those looking to relocate a business or family to our city that its government lacks common sense. Twenty-eight Council members voted for it. Twenty Council members -- including Councilmembers Gentile and Greenfield, and the three Republican members -- voted against it. The mayor has signed it into law when he should have vetoed it. Some of the 20 who voted against the legislation consider themselves strong environmental proponents and simply argued that there were better ways to protect the environment from bag waste, with more bag recycling programs topping the list. The issue has not gone unnoticed in Albany. State Senator Simcha Felder has introduced a piece of state legislation that is co-sponsored by State Senator Marty Golden (whom I serve as chief of staff) that would bar municipalities in the state from imposing a fee or tax on consumers who use paper or plastic bags. The bill is very likely to pass the Senate, but its future in the Assembly remains murky. *** The loss of Artie Schack, like the loss of Larry Morrish, affects a community in ways that you really do not completely understand until time has passed. We intuitively know our community lost a great man in Judge Artie Schack. A simple reciting of his resume clearly makes that point. I did not share his political philosophy, but did have many reasons to speak with him over the years on governmental and community topics, mostly in my role working for Senator Golden and in his role as a judge who often unofficially lobbied for measures that were important to the jurists. At least, that is how the conversations would begin. In all likelihood, we would drift into a discussion of another topic. It might have been history, of which Artie was wellread and well-spoken. It could have been government, of which we may not have shared the same views, but did share the same respect for the institutions. It could have been about major league baseball. I always thought it was amazing that I was talking with the former counsel to the Professional Baseball Players Association. And sometimes it was about the community and local politics. People come and go, but good people are all too few. Artie Schack was a good person who will be missed by our community greatly. May he rest in peace, and may Dilia and his family find comfort in knowing that Artie left many wonderful memories. Jerry Kassar is the chairperson of the Kings County Conservative Party. He is a longtime community activist who has served as an officer or member of many organizations. He works for the state of New York. And then there was one The departure of Ted Cruz and John Kasich makes Donald Trump, unbelievably, the winner of the Republican presidential primary. Our complacent citizens must take this threat to good government seriously before it is too late. The Donald has surfed a crest of discontent in the nation that could carry him into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue if Democrats don’t properly prepare for this unorthodox candidate. There is little doubt that the Donald, during the race, will concentrate on subjects with which he is most familiar: hate speech, conspiracy theories and marital gossip. He will avoid discussion about his lack of political experience and his regular business failures, at all costs. Trump’s bombast and absolute disregard for facts have made him a hero of Tea Party Republicans and he has an ability to foment controversy to divert attention from practical and important issues just like a skilled three card monte huckster uses distraction to fool his “marks.” Trump’s ability to say anything and appear to be different to different groups works as long as they listen and don’t look at the cards or the hands. This chameleon can assure conservatives that he is conservative although he has defended Planned Parenthood, and now claims he is anti-choice despite support for PP legislation. He yells anti-immigrant slurs even though he built a real estate empire on the backs of undocumented illegal immigrant workers. He promises that he will expel illegal immigrants, prohibit Muslims from entering America and that we will build a “great” wall between Mexico and the U.S. with the Mexican government paying the cost. The key to his success is to get people to listen to his promises and to ignore the contradictions. He promises America will be strong and respected around the world but stated, “We cannot be the policeman of the world” and suggested that U.S. troops in South Korea (30,000) and Japan (50,000) be removed and that those nations build their own nuclear arsenals. If every nation in the world has a nuclear arsenal, the world will not be a safer place. Enigmatically, he has called for American troops to be deployed to Syria and Iraq to fight ISIS. Trump promises tax cuts but also promises increased defense spending to “make America great again.” Which is the true promise: decreased taxes or increased expenditures? I believe that America is greater than any threat of National Trumpism and that in the unlikely event that the Trumpzies successfully vote him into the White House, the Republic, protected by the Constitution, will weather any storm including Typhoon Donald. Senator Clinton, the presumptive Democratic candidate, will face a tough fight for the presidency against an adversary who has proven that facts are mere obstacles to be overcome or avoided. The eventual presidential victor will still have to find a way to make America better and to make Americans feel better again. *** On May 2, 2016, we lost a local hero when Justice Arthur M. Schack passed away unexpectedly. He was a renaissance man: a high school teacher, an attorney and an elected Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He loved history and was an exceptional student who earned graduate degrees and a law degree before becoming legal counsel to the Major League Baseball Players Association. He distinguished himself as a legal scholar before he ever handed down a well-reasoned decision from the bench. He tempered justice with compassion. He and his beloved wife, Dilia, a local district leader and community board member, were familiar to so many people in the community because of their involvement in many activities. Justice Schack maintained a life-long devotion to the Boy Scouts of America while doting on his son and daughter and grandchildren. He was a past chair of Community Board 10 where he will always be remembered for his energy, intellect and devotion to public service. He shall be missed. Brian Kieran is an attorney who works as a Principal Law Clerk in the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Kings County and is a Democrat. It is diffi cult to believe that, as the city grows, the population increases and the economy prospers, citizens need fewer hospitals and health service resources. Do we need a Starbucks, chain drug store and bank on every corner but no hospitals? The slim hope is the company that wins the proposal contest will be obligated to provide a large emergency medical facility to compensate for the loss of the full service hospital it will replace. Mayor de Blasio has fulfi lled an incredible amount of his promises in a very short time. He has imposed the extra protection of an inspector general for the NYPD and signed off on the laws passed by the City Council which may leave police offi cers subject to lawsuits for negligent performance of their duties. He has provided universal pre K without a tax increase. He is settling the outstanding municipal worker contracts neglected by Mike Bloomberg for the next mayor to handle. He is championing Vision Zero to reduce traffi c fatalities to zero. It is unfair to question his commitment to his ideals or to the fulfi llment of his promises. The City Council will pass 11 laws and four resolutions to create a Vision Zero environment for our streets. The new laws provide a lower speed limit for city streets and enhanced penalties for reckless drivers. The state legislature must approve the changes. We also need the state legislature to provide a reasonable number of speed cameras to enforce the new laws. Let us hope that our legislators will work together as a group to see that these changes and improvements are made quickly. When so much is at stake, it is not the time to make political statements or play games”. The Kings County Memorial Day Parade was simply awesome.
