22 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP • MAY 13 - MAY 19, 2016 City unveils renderings of coming ferry landings A rendering of the new ferry landing. BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK [email protected] Renderings of the 10 brand new ferry landings being worked up as part of the Citywide Ferry Service were unveiled on Thursday, May 5 by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) – the agency behind the $55 million waterway expansion. The project – first announced last February – will take place in two phases with the South Brooklyn, Astoria and Rockaway routes beginning operation in 2017 and the Soundview and Lower East Side routes to follow in 2018. The new service, to be operated by San Francisco-based ferry provider Hornblower, will fully integrate the East River Ferry as well as the new routes, currently being fabricated by Skanska at May Ship Repair on Staten Island and designed by McLaren Engineering Group. According to NYCEDC, the landings will be 35 feet wide and 90 feet long and equipped with canopies and wind screens to provide shelter from inclement weather. In addition, the barges will house Rendering courtesy of EDC ticket machines and waiting areas, providing ample space for passengers to queue before boarding. All ferry landings are being designed to best fit each specific site, and are currently under final review by the city’s Public Design Commission. “Citywide Ferry is going to connect New Yorkers in 21 neighborhoods around the city with new opportunities for jobs and recreation – all for the price of a subway ride,” said NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer. “Building the landings is another huge step as we work toward launching this exciting service in 2017.” The South Brooklyn route (one of the first to premiere) will have landings at Bay Ridge (via the 69th Street Pier), the Brooklyn Army Terminal, Red Hook, Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 near Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1 in DUMBO and Wall Street’s Pier 11. Total travel time from first stop to last will be just 43 minutes, and the trip will cost the same as a subway ride. All boats will be equipped with WiFi, and accommodate at least 149 passengers per trip. SAME GREAT PLACE, SAME GREAT FOOD BOOK YOUR COMMUNION, GRADUATION, BIRTHDAY PARTIES WITH US.
