38 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP • MAY 13 - MAY 19, 2016 Bay Ridge Greenmarket kicks off ninth annual season BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK [email protected] Bay Ridge is going green. The nabe celebrated the kick-off of the ninth annual Bay Ridge Greenmarket on Saturday, May 7 as residents flocked to the parking lot of Walgreens (off the corner of 95th Street and Third Avenue) for some fresh eats. Hosted each year by Counc i l m e m b e r Vincent Gentile in conjunction with GrowNYC, the market – which features fruits, vegetables and even some wild caught fish – will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (with food scrap collections from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) now through November 19. “It was a wholesome opening day for our ninth year of the Bay Ridge Greenmarket,” said Gentile of the turnout. “It is always a pleasure working with the GrowNYC team and I am truly thrilled to see our community literally enjoy the fruits of our labor each year. It really is ‘Bay Ridge’s Town Square’ and I look forward to another great season.” For the month of May, Williams Fruit Farm from Ulster County will also be on hand to sell potted plants, hanging planters and flowers from its greenhouse. In the fall, Ridgeites can expect a stay from Wager’s Cider Mill. This season’s vendors include: American Pride Seafood (Suffolk County), Bread Alone (Ulster County), Goodale Farms (Suffolk County), Jersey Farm (Hunterdon County, New Jersey), and Toigo Orchards (Cumberland County, Pennsylvania). Saturday’s opening ceremony included a live performance from the Jazz Foundation. BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP/Photos by SB News Toby and Atticus Roberts. Ishmael Schwabaum. Leeann Chan. Sadie Kipping.
