Resuming play after the Easter
break, the 1-0 Fontbonne Varsity
softball team took on a
familiar foe from Queens, the Terriers
of St. Francis Prep, as well as a new
entry to the BQCHSAA Division AA,
the Xaverian Clippers.
FONTBONNE 5
ST. FRANCIS PREP 4
By the fourth inning, Fontbonne
was down 4-0 until the Bonnies began
to put some runs on the board in
the bottom of the sixth inning. After
getting on base, Arianna Heinsch, Lexi
Bertelle and Kayla Rolon all crossed
the plate to narrow the Terriers’ lead
to 4-3.
After Santina Arena singled with
two out in the bottom of the seventh
inning, Heinsch belted a dramatic tworun
homer to beat the Terriers 5-4. In
addition to her game-winning home
run, Heinsch went three for three with
two singles as the lead-off hitter and
pitcher of the game.
FONTBONNE 5 XAVERIAN 3
As a new entry to the Brooklyn
Queens AA Varsity Division,
Xaverian’s Varsity softball team had
its first encounter with Fontbonne..
The Bonnies started the scoring
in the second inning as Nicki Torani
singled and stole second, and then
was subsequently doubled home by
Sydney LaCognata. In the third inning,
Bertelle scored after walking and
stealing second for a 2-0 Fontbonne
lead.
The Clippers came back with a run
of their own when Noel Cook scrambled
home from third on a wild pitch
to make the score 2-1 by the end of the
fourth inning.
Maintaining just a one run lead going
into the bottom of the sixth inning,
Fontbonne’s Christina DeAngelis and
Anna Bolino singled as Sydney LaCognata
stepped up to the plate “showing
bunt” several times to draw in the
Xaverian defense. Pulling back her
bunt stance, LaCognata belted a bullet
into left field for a home run to advance
Fontbonne to a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, the
Clippers would add two more runs as
Bolino relieved Anna Acevedo on the
mound for the final 5-3 Fontbonne win.
Besides her three-run homer, La-
Cognata would finish the game two for
three with a double and four RBIs to
provide what Fontbonne Coach Frank
Marinello calls “insurance runs” that
he constantly reminds his players are
necessary to win games at this level.
