18 NOVEMBER 25 - DECEMBER 1, 2016 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP BROOKLYN EDUCATION The student-athletes at St. Edmund Preparatory High School did their part to raise breast cancer awareness in October. The cheerleaders participated in the Prospect Park Breast Cancer Walk on October 16 and also sold ribbons at school lunch periods. The step team held a bake sale to help the cause. On October 14, the school’s junior varsity and varsity girls volleyball teams hosted St. John’s Prep for “Dig Pink” games in support of breast cancer research. All money raised from game admission, rafles and concession sales was donated to breast cancer charities. The girls soccer team held a “Kick Out Breast Cancer” fundraiser and raised over $2,500. A student vs. faculty volleyball game was the last of these fundraising events. The school expects to donate over $5,000 to breast cancer charities this fall. * * * St. Edmund Prep raises breast cancer awareness Twelve students and two teachers from St. Edmund Preparatory High School traveled to Havana, Cuba for a week of outreach and service in coordination with Fundación Amistad. The entire St Edmund Prep community helped support the e ort by participating in the school’s yearlong Hunger Awareness Project, which raised money for the group’s outreach. The SEP mission to Cuba toured Havana, including Revolution Square. They visited with the Salesian Sisters at their convent and retreat center. Money raised from the Hunger Awareness Project will help the sisters establish a daycare center on their grounds. The group toured the facility and the site of the new center. The group spent time with one of the families that they were working with at Padre Felix Varela Cultural Center. They helped the young children at the Padre Usera Daycare Center and also visited a day care center at the Student-athletes at St. Edmund Prep play volleyball for a cause. Sanctuary of San Lazaro. The SEP mission shared milkshakes with Archbishop Juan de la Caridad Garcia Rodriguez and learned about the church in Cuba today. They made friends with other young people when they spent an evening with a Cuban youth group, playing soccer, talking and sharing dinner. Photo courtesy of St. Edmund Prep * * * On October 10, the Bishop Kearney High School Marching Band and several students and faculty members participated in the Columbus Day Parade in New York City.They marched up Fifth Avenue as the musical contingent for Mayor de Blasio.
