Bronx County Chorus spring auditions
Bronx County Chorus announces
membership auditions for spring 2019.
The theme of this May’s concert is, Disney,
‘Dedicated to Disney.” It will have
selections showcasing music throughout
Disney history.
Have you thought of joining or auditioning
for a chorus? Now is the time
to come, and try Bronx County Chorus.
This spring begins their 80th
year, so it is the oldest ecumenical chorus
in the Bronx. Members come from
many Bronx and lower Westchester
neighborhoods, including Co-op City,
Parkchester and Throggs Neck. Come
to conveniently located First Lutheran
Church of Throggs Neck, 3075 Baisley
Avenue, , on Monday, January 7 or
Sunday, January 13 or Monday, January
14. Chorus begins at 7:30 p.m., and
if you are trying us out, come earlier.
By coming earlier, you will benefi t by
meeting the director, Miles Fellenberg;
assistant director Chris Aquino and
choral members. Requirements are
fi rst and foremost, the desire to join a
chorus, having some choral or vocal
experience and of course it’s helpful to
be able to read music.
Past concerts have included live
instrumental accompaniment as they
celebrated for example, December
holidays. This May’s concert is dedicated
to Disney music and should be
a delight for people of all ages. Openings
in all voice parts are available.
Bronx County Chorus performs two
outreach concerts and two formal concerts,
each semester. They have sung
for Kings Harbor Multicare Center
this past December. Other community
participation opportunities are
considered. Bronx County Chorus is
partially supported by performances
and with public funds from the Bronx
Council On the Arts, through the New
York State Council on the Arts Decentralization
Program
First Lutheran Church of Throggs
Neck is accessible by train or bus. Semester
dues for chorus members are
$40 for individuals, $60 for families
and couples.

Hockey history heads to Empire
City Casino when the New York Rangers
takeover on Saturday, January 12
with members of the 1994 championship
team joining hockey fans to watch
the Rangers take on the New York Islanders
at the Casino Night Pre-Party.
The Casino Night Pre-Party is free to
attend, with online pre-registration
required. Fans wishing to attend can

The Pre-Party kicks-off the
countdown to the New York Rangers
Casino Night, presented by Empire
City Casino, taking place on Wednesday,
February 13, 2019. At the annual
Casino Night charity benefi t, guests
can dine with their favorite Rangers
players for an exclusive night of
chef tastings and casino-style gaming
to benefi t the Garden of Dreams

The Casino Night Pre-Party fun on
January 12 begins at 12:30 p.m. in the
casino’s Red Room (located on the 2nd
fl oor next to the Alley 810 bowling alley)
with New York Rangers legends and
Stanley Cup champions Mike Richter,
Adam Graves, Stéphane Matteau and
Mike Hartman (fi rst time they have all
been on property together for a family
reunion of sorts) watching the game
together with fans.
These core four players, who each
had game-changing roles during the
Rangers 1994 championship run, will
mingle with fans, sign autographs and
cheer the Rangers on. Islanders’ fans
are also welcome to attend and enjoy a
variety of free food, games, and giveaways
throughout the festivities, including
a chance to win tickets to the
Casino Night benefi t in February.
As part of Empire City’s close collaboration
with the New York Rangers,
the casino hosts a variety of Rangers
viewing parties throughout the
year, each hosted by a different Rangers
legend, such as Stéphane Matteau,
who hosted the fi rst viewing party of
the current season late last year.
Fans who can’t make the event on
January 12 can still attend one of the
remaining Rangers viewing parties at
Empire City Casino this season. Upcoming
dates include: Tuesday, February
12, 8:00 p.m. at Winnipeg Jets;
Thursday, March 7, 7:30 p.m. at Detroit
Red Wings; and Monday, April 1, 7 p.m.
at New Jersey Devils.

landmarks, each re-created with bark,
leaves, and other natural materials—
all under the twinkling glow of the
Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Replicas
debuting this year include the historic
Battery Maritime Building, vintage
ferry boats, the Battery Park Control
House, the Woolworth Building, One
World Trade Center, the Oculus, and
the Terminal Warehouse. The Holiday
Train Show runs through Monday,
January 21, 2019.

Park Control House, the Woolworth
Building, One World Trade Center, the
Oculus, and the Terminal Warehouse.
The new Lower Manhattan replicas
will share the spotlight with old favorites
including the Statue of Liberty and
the Ellis Island Immigration Station.
Accompanying programs include a
cappella performances, children’s activities,
and Bar Car Nights.
Evergreen Express through Monday,
January 21: Children step into
Discovery Center Depot to investigate
samples of evergreen tree branches
and cones, mount a conifer sample,
craft a cone critter, and design an evergreen
swag (a miniature, simple evergreen
wreath with a bow) to take
home. Children can pretend to ride the
rails aboard our child-sized play train
and put on a puppet show in the Woodland
Puppet Theater.
Putting Down Roots: Celebrating
30 Years of Bronx Green-Up through
Sunday, April 28: NYBG is commemorating
the 30th Anniversary of its
community gardening outreach program
with a photo exhibit including
36 photographs from 15 of the gardens
and urban farms where NYBG’s Bronx
Green-Up works.
Bronx Green-Up supports more
than 200 local greening groups,
schools, and community organizations
in their missions to improve their
neighborhoods through greening projects.
In honor of this anniversary, four
teen photographers from the Bronx
Documentary Center’s Bronx Junior
Photo League—18-year-old Tony Baizan
Garcia, 19-year-old Kayla Beltran,
18-year-old Mitchell Harris-Dennis,
and 16-year-old Tianna Maldonado—
spent the summer visiting Bronx
Green-Up community gardens and urban
farms, documenting the activity
of these organizations, from planting,
weeding, and composting to harvest
and celebration. Their dynamic photos
will be on view showcasing community
building and activism taking
place all across the borough.
The New York Botanical Garden is
