BRONX TIMES REPORTER, FEBRUARY 1 BTR 5-21, 2019 81
The Monsignor Scanlan
Track Team performed well
at the NYS CHSAA (Catholic
High School Athletic Association)
Intersectional Championship
on Saturday, February
9th at the Ocean Breeze
Recreational Facility in
Staten Island. The best track
and field athletes throughout
the New York State Catholic
Schools were in attendance
for this meet. The competition
was intense, and it was
the qualifier to compete in
the New York State 2019 Winter
Track and Field Championships
to be held also at
Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex
on Saturday, March 2,
2019.
This meet will host the
best athletes from the New
York State Public High
School Athletic Association
Indoor Track and Field
Championships and the New
York State Federation Indoor
Track and Field Championships.
Federation medals
will go to the top six overall
finishers. This will give our
Catholic Schools athletes
an opportunity to compete
against public and private
schools for the title of Best in
New York State. Each section
is allowed two competitors
per individual event with a
possible third place entry. If
an individual finishes third
in their state qualifying meet
and achieves the qualifying
standard, they will qualify
for the state meet.
Monsignor Scanlan High
School will have Freshman
Hannah Gadpaille represent
the CHSAA in the 55-meter
dash. Hannah finished second
in the NYS CHSAA Intersectional
Championship
in the 55 meter dash, which
earned her the right to compete
in the NYS Federation
Championship. She also took
5th place in the 300-meter
race, which earned her a slot
as an alternate on the 4x200
CHSAA relay team. This
is an awesome accomplishment,
Congratulations Hannah!
We are excited about
Hannah’s success; however,
we are just as pleased
with Nana Achampong,
who broke his personal record
in the 300 and 600 meters.
Eden Lawrence broke
his personal record in the
300 meters. Tyrique Hanson
PR in the 55- and 300-meter
dash and Fredrick Escobar,
who PR in the 300-meter
dash. When an athlete performs
their best and break
their personal record at the
biggest meet of the season, it
shows that they tried their
best and the program is
working. They may not win
the medals or qualify for the
federation meet at this time,
however with continuous
improvement, they will be
there. Congratulations to all
that competed.
Our next meet will be
Tuesday, February 19th, the
Eastern States Indoor Track
& Field Championship the
New Balance Track & Field
Center at the Armory. Come
out and see your future
Olympians!
