LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
RHA: A mandate
for abortion
Dear editor,
This is a follow up to a recently
published letter I sent
to the editor. Most of us by now
are familiar with the Reproductive
Health Act. There is
one provision of the RHA that
has had tragic and cruel consequences,
and this was recently
revealed in a news story that
made headlines in the mainstream
media.
In the earlier part of this
month Jennifer Irigoyen, a
beautiful young woman and
resident of New York City, in
the second trimester of her
pregnancy, was savagely murdered
by her former boyfriend.
She was stabbed numerous
times, in particular the stomach,
which lead to the death of
her unborn baby.
Prior to the RHA, the perpetrator
would have been charged
with second degree murder and
second degree abortion, however,
the district attorney had
to drop the charge of abortion
due to a provision in the RHA
that moved abortion from penal
law and the criminal code,
to the public health law. This
change removed any accountability
for the death of the unborn.
And consider this; what if
the perpetrator or father, knowing
the law now, meticulously
plots his crime so that when attacking
the pregnant mother of
the unborn baby, he carefully
makes certain that his assault
only infl icts harm-death- toward
the unborn, making sure
the mother survives; I guess it
would be just another form of
abortion.
The Reproductive Health
Act is nothing more than a
mandate for unrestricted abortion.
It is an abomination, and
unquestionably the most horrendous
and brutal legislation
ever conceived. Even many of
those who support abortion
think it much too extreme.
This once great storied state,
governed by a radical demagogue
and a morally corrupt
democrat party devoid of humanity
and all sense of propriety
and decency, has lost its
mind and most regrettably has
lost its soul.

The state of
Bronx cinema
Dear editor,
One fi lm that portrays the
Bronx is Universal Pictures’
‘Green Book’, a movie that depicts
the story of the classical/
jazz pianist Don Shirley and
his friend Tony Vallelonga who
drove him to his engagements
in the Deep South in 1962, is
a chapter of the Civil Rights
movement that appeals to audiences
of all ages, and shares
the same message as ‘Hidden
Figures’ and ‘Selma’, two movies
that drew signifi cant audiences
to their venues. While
Louisiana served as a de facto
substitution for the borough (no
doubt because it was cheaper
to fi lm down there than here),
certain references and scenes
would kindle audiences who
live in areas of the borough to
travel and see this fi lm.
While the fi lm has generated
a series of controversies
regarding its portrayal of
Shirley and his relationship
with Vallelonga, Green Book
has not played in either of the
two Bronx multiplex’ since it
opened nationwide in November
of last year and, in the opinion
of this individual, not taking
the effort to schedule this
movie in either multiplex is an
affront to Bronxites who wish
to see a commercial fi lm that
raises the bar that also promotes
the borough at a time
when many denizens of the borough
are witnessing a renaissance
on all levels to make the
Bronx more appealing to artists
and businesses alike, not
to mention slighting audiences
of an older generation who are
interested in seeing this fi lm
in favor of millenarians who
also might have an interest in
seeing this fi lm for a number of
reasons.
Until another theatre chain
establishes a third multiplex,
namely in a location which
is central to the under-represented
sections of borough, or
someone creates a non-profi t
membership-driven movie theatre
that will pimarily showcase
art, independent and upscale
commercial movies, the
borough that is considered one
of the birthplaces of modern
American cinema will forever
remain one that favors fi lms
that are facile to the mind and
not challenging to the soul.

New senator
is missing
Dear editor,
So now that we have elected
a new state senator, Alexandria
Biaggi, who was chosen
to replace Jeff Klein, only one
question - where is she? MIA.
I only read about our Councilman
Mark Gjonaj and his
involvements in our community.
Fighting against the Morris
Park road diet plan, working
with our police precincts,
addressing the concerns of
tenants’ security issues, and
at times attending the Morris
Park Association meetings.
So, if anyone locates our
new state senator, tell her we
can sure use her help, or we
could put her picture on a
milk carton.

Wrong person
to lead parade
Dear editor,
I am grateful to the TNBA
for organizing the Throggs
Neck St. Patrick’s Day Parade
for the last 20 years. I only
missed it once when I was
sick. However, I don’t understand
how Congressman Joseph
Crowley, a man who consistently
opposed the Catholic
Church’s teachings in voting
for abortion and gay marriage,
could have been chosen
to lead a parade in honor of St.
Patrick, a man who promoted
the Catholic Church and her
teachings throughout Ireland.
Can anyone imagine a
politician who voted against
gay rights being chosen to be
grand marshal of a Gay Pride
Parade? Would the organizers
of the Martin Luther King
Parade chose a racist or someone
who voted in the interests
of the KKK to be their grand
marshal? Is it possible that
a politician who voted in the
interests of the Palestinians
could be chosen to lead the
annual NYC Celebrate Israel
Parade? Why is it that such
considerations and sensitivities
go out the window only
when it comes to the Catholic
Church and her teachings?
Although the TNBA is not
a church organization, the St.
Patrick’s Day Parade it organizes
deeply involves St. Benedict’s,
at which the Mass and
breakfast before the parade
is held, as well as St. Frances
de Chantal and other Catholic
parishes and religious
communities in the neighborhood.
Many people might even assume
that the parade was organized
by St. Benedict’s and/
or St. Frances. TNBA should
at the very least be considerate
towards the Catholic community
in Throggs Neck, and
choose grand marshals who
are not known to publicly oppose
Catholic Church teachings.
That should have been
a no-brainer. Joseph Crowley
marching in the St. Patrick’s
Day Parade as grand marshal
is scandalous because it gives
the impression that the Catholic
Church is okay with abortion
and gay marriage.
I hope the TNBA will recognize
its mistake in choosing
Joseph Crowley to be
grand marshal, and ask him
to kindly step down, because
if between now and parade
day it was learned that Joseph
Crowley made some kind of racially
sensitive, or politically
incorrect comments, he would
be removed from the parade
lickety-split.
Unfortunately I will have
to miss this year’s parade, unless
Joseph Crowley kindly
steps down or is removed as
grand marshal. I have no
doubt that St. Patrick would
do the same.
