Power Women series
BY ZACHARY GEWELB
On the newest episode of her Power
Women series, Schneps Media President
and Publisher Victoria Schneps interviews
Elizabeth Lusskin, the President
of the Long Island City Partnership.
During their chat, Lusskin talks
about growing up in Manhattan in the
1970s, how her education gave her an
interest in housing issues, the growth
of Long Island City and Amazon pulling
out of the deal to build HQ2 in LIC.
Long Island City Partnership is the
local development corporation for this
westernmost neighborhood of Queens.
Their mission is to advocate for economic
development that benefi ts the
area’s industrial, commercial, tech,
cultural, tourism, and residential sectors.
The goal is to attract new businesses
to LIC, retain those already
there, welcome new residents and visitors,
and promote a vibrant and authentic
mixed-use community.
Lusskin is an attorney with nearly
two decades of experience in nonprofi
t management, economic development
and government service, and
helped clients increase their effectiveness
through improved focus, organizational
structure and strategic implementation.
She was appointed by
Mayor Bloomberg to serve as a Public
Member of NYC Loft Board, having
completed a three-year term on the
Rent Guidelines Board.
She’s been the President of the LICP
since 2013. Lusskin credits work being
done by people before her “going back
40 years” in making Long Island City
the sort of place that Amazon would
want to come to in the fi rst place.
“We’ve seen enormous growth going
back to the early 2000s due to zoning
changes,” she said.
Lusskin says that making everyone
feel important has been a key to
her success. “I try and approach everybody
with respect and realize that
everybody has something to offer and
bring to the table.”
When it comes to the Amazon deal,
she feels that LIC has developed into
the sort of centralized location that
companies want to invest in. Regardless
of the status of the deal, she feels
Long Island City is still where everyone
wants to be.
“We’re one of the fastest growing
neighborhoods in the country and
we’re also one of the most productive
areas in the state,” she says. “It’s a city
within New York City opposed to just a
neighborhood.”
