The Church of the Mediator houses an Episcopalian parish that is one of
the leading social forces in the Spuyten Duyvil community.
BRONX TIMES REPORTER, MARCH 2 BTR 9-APRIL 4, 2019 51
The Church of the Mediator
is located at West 231st
Street and Kingsbridge Avenue
in Spuyten Duyvil and
has been a fi xture in the community
for over 150 years. It
has a congregation of only
150 people yet its myriad activities
are frequently chronicled
in the newspapers. The
pastor, Rev. Diego Delgado-
Miller, is a master at public
relations and maintains a
very active parish.
The church was established
on August 15, 1855 on
property donated by Judge
James R. Whiting but the
wood-frame church structure
was not completed until 1857
at the moderate cost of $5,500.
The church was consecrated
on November 6, 1864 by
Bishop Horatio Potter when
the mortgage was paid off, as
was the custom. It started as
a mission church of St. John’s
in Yonkers but gained its independence
rather quickly.
By the 1890s, it was very wellknown
in the community
largely due to its popular cadet
corps and marching band
as well as for the baseball
team it sponsored.
The present church was
designed by architect Henry
Vaughan and begun in 1906
and the following year a roof
was placed over the structure
so that the basement could
be used for mass. Among
Vaughan’s other important
works are the National Cathedral
in Washington, D.C. and
several of the chapels in the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine
here in New York City.
The old wooden church was
razed in 1908. Construction
continued and the fi rst service
in the new upper church
was held in 1913. It was consecrated
on January 23, 1927 by
Bishop William T. Manning
when the mortgage was paid
off. The bishop also used the
occasion to praise the rector,
Reverend Doctor John Campbell,
who was celebrating 30
years of service to the church.
Their organist, Walter
Kieswetter, also celebrated his
thirtieth anniversary at that
service. The pastor and congregation
of the Marble Hill
Methodist Episcopal Church
on Kingsbridge Avenue and
230th Street also joined in the
ceremony in lieu of holding
their own service.
The church houses some
beautiful Tiffany stained
glass windows in the chapel.
They also have stained glass
windows of medieval design
as well as their Clerestory
windows and Rose window
along with several others.
They were designed by the C.
E. Kempe Company of London
specifi cally for the church.
They also have a Skinner
organ with three keyboards
which is 70 years old. George
Tinworth was one of the most
renowned terra cotta craftsmen
in England and it was he
who fashioned both the reredos
behind both the high altar
and the one in the chapel.
It is the only example of his
work in the country.
The church is well worth a
visit both for its architecture
and appointments. The Reverend
Diego Delgado-Miller
currently serves as pastor
and will welcome you.
