BY GENE DEFRANCIS PETA HONORS 40TH PCT. GOAT RESCUE
Actions speak louder than
In honor of the NYPD’s rescue of a goat who escaped from a
slaughterhouse on St. Patrick’s Day, PETA presented the 40th
Precinct’s police offi cers with a Compassionate Police Department
Award during the precinct’s Community Council meeting
on Wednesday, April 3 at Lincoln Hospital. After receiving a call
about an animal jumping between traffi c, police offi cers Anthony
Picariello and Christopher Mazzella reported to the scene at the
intersection of East 132nd Street and Locust Avenue. When the
goat hopped onto nearby train tracks, the offi cers stopped an
oncoming train, called an emergency-service unit for assistance,
captured the animal and transported him to Animal Care Centers
of NYC. The goat has now found a permanent home at Skylands
Animal Sanctuary & Rescue in New Jersey.

BRONX TIMES REPORTER, A BTR PRIL 12-18, 2019 71
words. To everyone who has
found the time to volunteer
and attend our events and to
those who donated their hard
earn money to improve this
community, we thank you.
We have a lot of skeptics and
doubters in the Bronx. Some
of them will feed you misinformation
because they want you
to be scared. They want you to
move and they want you to sell
your home so their friends can
buy it, tear it down and build.
They want you to move out of
your apartment so your affordable
rent can be increased
for the next tenant. They want
to raise property tax and the
water bill to make it uncomfortable
for homeowners and
landlords.
We can not go forward
with unfair taxation. We
can not go forward without
proper representation. Some
of our elected offi cials are
not representing us and caving
in to the ‘Future of the
Bronx’.
The litmus test to any
elected offi cial is asking the
question, “Is the Bronx overpopulated?”
If they say no...
run... that elected offi cial
should never have your support.
The Bronx population is
1.5 million and rising fast
with only 43 square miles,
much of it park land.
The rest of NYC has about
7 million people living in the
remaining 250 square miles.
Meanwhile, other US cities
outside of NYC with a
larger population than the
Bronx are: Los Angeles, 4
million people in 500 square
miles; Chicago, 3 million
with 230 square miles; Houston,
2.3 million 650 square
miles; and Philadelphia and
Phoenix have about the same
population as the Bronx with
140 and 500 square miles respectively.
The insanity needs to stop.
More residents will not necessarily
equal more customers
to our shopping corridor.
It could create more instability.
That is why communication
within the neighborhood
is so vital. That is why we appreciated
your trust in us to
be that voice to stand up for
you, the residents and business
owners of Allerton.
The Business Incubator
Project will help local residents
succeed in small business
with little risk. The
community clean-ups build
character and community
team building. Along with
the holiday lights, it builds
morale and community
pride.
We will continue to fi ght
to protect our home and your
contribution to our journal
ad will help support and protect
our community.

BY AL D’ANGELO
How much do we take before
we say enough? The national
political scene is a
disgrace, party politics have
polarized this country. Politicians
spend more time calling
each other names than
they do tending to the business
of the people they are
supposed to serve. When
I see voting strictly along
party lines, that tells me politicians
are more about party
than people. You can’t trust
the media any more to tell
you the news so you can form
your own opinion. Depending
on the newspaper you read or
the news media you watch,
the news will be slanted to
the political view of the paper
or station’s bias. I was never
a proponent of term limits because
I felt that we the people
could decide who we want to
represent us by our vote, but
since we can’t seem to get unbiased
information from our
news media, I have changed
my mind. Term limits may
allow elected offi cials to stop
worrying about their jobs
and start worrying about the
people they represent.
The Morris Park Community
Association is battling
the City of New York over the
city’s plan to narrow Morris
Park Avenue to one lane
in each direction. They call
it road dieting. The people
of the community, business
owners, and community organizations
overwhelmingly
oppose the plan. We have fi ve
schools, two hospitals, police
and fi re departments that use
Morris Park daily.
We have trucks that double
park each day to make
their deliveries to local businesses.
Metro North should
have the new Morris Park
station in the next couple
of years causing more traffi
c. The Association is concerned
about the increase in
traffi c on our side streets due
to people avoiding Morris
Park Avenue. The city claims
they want to slow traffi c to
save pedestrian injuries. We
gave them a simple alternative,
stagger the lights and
enforce the speed limits. Too
simple, I guess.
Someone once told me follow
the money. I wonder how
much this road dieting has
cost the city (the tax payers).
Who has the contract
to do the work, and how did
they get it? Why, after Morris
Park has been taken off the
priority list, are they persisting?
Could there be another
reason Morris Park is being
singled out? I’ll give you my
feelings about that in the future.
The association sees this
as an attack on our democracy
and that should infuriate
all of us, opponents and
proponents alike. Elected offi
cials are there to do the will
of the people. I guess sometimes
power goes to their
heads. They are there to
serve the people, they are no
better or no worse than the
rest of us.
The people have spoken
out loud and clear and what
City Hall is saying is “I don’t
care what you say, I know
better”. When Mayor deBlasio
was the Public Advocate
he came to Morris Park numerous
times to fi ght for our
concerns; what happened?
