Older adults &
sexual health
P e o p l e
c o nt i nu e
to be sexually
active
as they age.
More than
half of people
between
the ages of 57 and 74 are
sexually active. Unfortunately,
many younger
people have negative attitudes
about aging and
believe that sex stops
when you get older. This
can leave older adults
without the information
they need to have
healthy and safe sex.
Many older adults
maintain an interest
in sex but face challenges
related to aging.
Chronic pain, menopause,
testosterone decreases,
and medication
side effects can impact
sex and sexual desire. It
can be diffi cult to have
conversations about sex
but it is important to
talk to your doctor if a
health related issue is
affecting your ability to
have sex. Sexual health
is part of your overall
health and a doctor can
assist you.
Older adults do not
always see themselves
as at risk for Sexually
Transmitted Infections
(STIs). In fact, STIs are
growing in the older
adult population. Cases
of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea
and Syphilis have
doubled in people aged
55 to 64. The Bronx
has some of the highest
rates of STIs in New
York. In NYC, over half
of people living with
HIV are over the age of
50. Among women newly
diagnosed with HIV in
the Bronx,
28% are
over the
age of 50.
Sexual activity
can
factor into
healthy aging
but it is important
to stay safe.
Condoms are a great
way to protect yourself
from Sexually Transmitted
Infections. There
are both male and female
condoms. If condoms
are used correctly
they are very effective
at preventing STIs. Latex
condoms are the
best at preventing STIs.
Make sure to keep condoms
in a cool dry place
and throw them out after
the expiration date.
If you are sexually
active you should get
tested for STIs and HIV.
Sometimes symptoms
of STIs and HIV are
similar to signs of aging,
such as aches and
pains. Additionally, because
the immune system
declines as you get
older, STIs may cause
more harm in older
adults. You can be
tested at your doctor’s
offi ce. Many community
clinics and health
departments also provide
testing.
Sex can contribute to
healthy aging. Learning
more about sex as you
age can support rewarding
and healthy sex.
