In Memory - Charles
Toscano
Our community and this
world have lost a great man.
Charlie was a gentleman and
a dedicated family man, along
with being involved in his community.
As a member of the
Northeast Bronx Association,
he was always at our meetings.
Charlie was decorated
veteran of the World War II.
We are personally saddened by
his passing and pray that God
will allow Charlie to rest in His
peace.
Frano Zagreda Resigns
We regret to inform you that
Frano has resigned as president
of the Northeast Bronx
Association for personal reasons.
Frano has been a stalwart
member and of NEBA since its
inception and a friend of this
community even longer than
that. We will miss his presence
and his insight, and we wish
Frano well in his future endeavors.
Joseph Bacote Accepts Presidency
Our vice president Joe Bacote
has agreed will assume the
role of president, at least until
June 30, 2019. We are pleased
that Joe is stepping up to the
plate, until the executive board
can decide on a new president.
New Traffi c Signal Coming
DOT recently completed a
study regarding the need for

to be completed by September
30.

NYC Consumer Affairs
NEBA was privileged to
have Tanjila Rahman from the
NYC Department of Consumer
Affairs at our meeting last
month. She provided us with a
summary of what her agency
does and brought a slew of useful
handouts; and she reviewed
some of the more popular programs
they provide.
The DCA and Worker Protection—
formerly the DCA—
protects and enhances the
daily economic lives of New
Yorkers to create thriving communities.
DCA licenses more
than 81,000 businesses in more
than 50 industries and enforces
key consumer protection, licensing,
and workplace laws
that apply to countless more.
By supporting businesses
through equitable enforcement
and access to resources and, by
helping to resolve complaints,
DCA protects the marketplace
from predatory practices and
strives to create a culture of
compliance. Through its community
outreach and the work
of its offi ces of Financial Empowerment
and Labor Policy
and Standards, DCA empowers
consumers and working families
by providing the tools and
resources they need to be educated
consumers and to achieve
fi nancial health and work-life
balance. DCA also conducts research
and advocates for public
policy that furthers its work to
support New York City’s communities.
Some of DCA programs
are: free one-on-one fi nancial
counseling; check a business’
license and complaint history;
fi le a complaint against a business;
assist you if you’ve been
wronged at work; and consumer
protection Ttps.
You can always call 311 to be
connected to the DCA or visit
www.nyc.gov/dca.
Gjonaj Opposes MP Road
Diet
Please support our local
businesses and community by
voicing your opposition and
signing this petition in opposition
to the proposed Road Diet
Plan for the Morris Park Avenue
commercial corridor.
Narrowing traffi c lanes and
parking lanes to create bike
lanes on a commercial corridor
of Morris Park Avenue will
add more congestion to an already
congested thoroughfare
caused by double parked cars
and trucks.
Trucks will no longer be
able to service the businesses
on this street creating hardships
for our local businesses.
Morris Park Avenue is a major
route that leads to Jacobi Medical
Center, Montefi ore Medical
Center, Yeshiva University and
the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine.
Emergency vehicles will
have a harder time getting
through these areas with the
added congestion and traffi c
from the road diet plan.
Driving on this avenue is already
increasingly diffi cult. It
has been proven that the Road
Diet Plan results in more congestion.
More traffi c on this
main thoroughfare will cause
more vehicles to use the residential
side streets affecting
the quality of life for our residents
in the Morris Park area.
Metro North is currently
doing a Bronx Metro North impact
study in this area to ensure
improvements around the
proposed Morris Park Station.
Metro North is working in coordination
with the Department
of City Planning, the NYC
Economic Development Corporation,
and the DOT —together
with the Bronx Borough President’s
offi ce and other key city
agencies and stakeholders —
which will be critical to ensuring
the stations are thoughtfully
integrated into the fabric
of the neighborhoods they will
serve.
Why is DOT rushing to do
the road diet project before the
study is done?
Local businesses, several
elected offi cials and local civic
organizations are opposed to
this plan. We will send this petition
with a letter to the mayor
of New York City and the NYC
DOT Commissioner.
We encourage the exploration
of alternative safety measures
and are open to further
discussions on this, such as the
implementation of high visibility
crosswalks and leading pedestrian
intervals.
To sign the petition, call
Councilman Gjonaj’s offi ce
