Flag & Sand From Iowa Jima
At the Wednesday, May 8
meeting of The Marine Corps
Leagues Yankee Detachment
#255, taking place at the Samuel
Young American Legion Post
#620, John Powers presented to
Commandant Owen Mangan
and the members of the detachment
an American fl ag that he
himself fl ew on top of Mount
Suribachi on the island of Iwo
Jima. Powers recently made
a pilgrimage to Iwo Jima. He
also gave the group a capsule
of sand from the beaches of Iwo
Jima, and showed them a video
of the event and a certifi cation
from The Iwo Jima Association
of America which authenticated
the event.
This kind gesture was very
much appreciated by the members
of the detachment, especially
considering the signifi cance of
the location. The fl ag was fl own
on the same spot where the fl ag
was raised in World War II.
And the sand was gathered
from the same beach where so
Aiden Joseph Keenan many Marines lost their lives.
