The New York Botanical Garden,
Bronx River Parkway (Exit 7W) at Fordham
Road will offer the following events
and programs:
Spring Uncorked: Saturday, May 18
and Sunday, May 19, noon to 4 p.m.:
Featuring wineries from Hudson Valley,
Brooklyn, and Long Island, the spring
beauty of NYBG sets the scene for this
wine lover’s weekend. Enjoy samples,
listen to live music, and learn the science
behind winemaking. Drop by the
spring preview of the NYBG Farmers
Market for freshly baked goods and
other delicious treats.
Wine Tasting: Saturday, May 18 and
Sunday, May 19, noon to 4 p.m.: With
purchase of a souvenir NYBG wine
tumbler, enjoy a fl ight of palate-pleasing
wines from Hudson Valley, Brooklyn,
and Long Island vineries.
The Botany of Wine: Beyond the
Grape: Saturday, May 18 and Sunday,
May 19, 1, 2, and 3 p.m.: Join NYBG
botanist Brian Boom to learn more
about the diversity of plants—beyond
the grape—that have gone into making
wine from around the world and throughout
history. In this talk, you’ll learn about
wine diversity and the habitat, soil, and
climate considerations that infl uence
what kinds fruits can be used in wine in
different places in the world.
Unwind and Drink Wine: Live Music:
Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19,
noon to 4 p.m.: While sampling wines
from throughout the region, unwind to
the original sounds of NYC-area singers
and songwriters. Saturday’s line-up is
comprised of Westchester singer-songwriter
Lillimure; “modern folktronica”
musician Sam Levin; indie-folk songwriter
Robert Leslie; and electro-pop
project ÊMIA. Sunday performances
will be from All Types of Kinds, a quartet
of alternative/indie singer-songwriters;
classically trained multi-instrumentalist
and songwriter Treya Lam; Brooklyn’s
Tiff Ortiz; and Bronx singer-songwriter
Durieux.
NYBG Farmers Market Preview: Saturday,
May 18 and Sunday, May 19: 11
a.m. to 5 p.m.: Get a sneak peek at the
vendors for the NYBG Farmers Market
and discover a variety of specialty items
and prepared foods for purchase, including
infused olive oils, savory james,
tomato sauces, artisan cheeses, and
more.

The Bronx Terminal Market will
present a series of free activities for the
whole family, from Spring Kidsfest to
the 7th Annual Rooftop Films Series to
2 Nights Of Salsa Dancing Under The
Stars. All events will take place on the
rooftop (parking level 6) of Bronx Terminal
Market located off 151st Street and
River Avenue.
Spring Kidsfest, Saturday, May 18
from 1 to 3 p.m.: Create, explore and
discover with kid-focused art activities,
a capoeira workshop, an under-the-sea
virtual reality trip, storytelling, performances,
games, giveaways, and music
provided by WBLS.
Participating community partners
include: Hostos Community College,
Bronx Children’s Museum, Bronx River
Arts Center, Bronx Museum, GrowNYC,
Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Go

The 7th Annual Rooftop Film Series
begins on Tuesday, June 9. Free
screenings of family-friendly movie favorites:
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”
on Tuesday June 9; “How to Train Your
Dragon: The Hidden World” on Tuesday,
July 11; and “Incredibles 2” on Tuesday,
August 13.
Feel free to bring lawn chairs, beach
towels and snacks. Enjoy pre-fi lm activities
with local Bronx community organizations
starting at 7 p.m. Films begin at
sunset (approximately 8:30 p.m.).
Salsa Dance Party, Thursday, August
8 and Friday, September 6. August
is Salsa Month in the Bronx and Bronx
Terminal Market is joining the party.
Brush up or start from scratch with a
salsa dance lesson at 6:30 p.m. Then
put those skills to use with dancing under
the stars from 7 to 8 p.m.

The JASA Van Cortlandt Choral
Group, consisting of 20 ethnically and
culturally diverse choristers ranging in
age from 60 to 90, will present a free
public concert in celebration of their diversity
on Thursday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at
JASA the Van Cortlandt Senior Center,
3880 Sedgwick Avenue.
The concert, ‘Our Songs, Our Heritage:
Building Bridges Through Music,’
features traditional folk songs from several
countries, sung in fi ve languages
including German, Spanish, Mandarin,
Hebrew and English.
The presentation explores intercultural
life through music and showcases
the personal histories and retrospectives
of chorus members with cultural
ties to Ireland, the Philippines, Puerto
Rico, China, Germany, Israel, Africa
and the United States, to celebrate cultural
diversity, friendship and to promote
mutual understanding.
The concert is the 4th and fi nal performance
chorus appearance and culmination
of a 15-week choral residency
under the direction of Bronx Opera
teaching artist and professional opera
singer Cheryl Warfi eld, and the second
year of the residency.
This program is supported, in part,
by public funds from the New York City
Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership
with the City Council.
The Bronx Opera’s association with
SU-CASA began in 2016 with the creation
of a chorus at the Riverdale YMYWHA
Senior Center, and has grown to
include choruses at the City Island Senior
Center as well as at JASA Van Cortlandt
Senior Center.

Make Music New York announces
an updated schedule for the musical
event on the summer solstice (Friday,
June 21) which celebrates and promotes
the natural music maker in all of
us. The worldwide participatory concerts
encourage everyone to get up, get
out and make music regardless of age
or ability.
This year there will be over 1,000
free, outdoor events taking place across
all fi ve boroughs. The Bronx will host
Samba Timba at the New York Botanical
Garden. The exciting event entails a
mish mash of Brazilian and Caribbean
sounds led by Nanny Assis and Bobby
Sanabria (Bronx Heritage Museum) and
featuring an ensemble of 10 performers.
Presenting partners NYBG will open the
grounds for free during the performance
from 3-6 pm.
Additionally, Punk Island and Porch
Stomp, each of which is a festival within
Make Music New York, will be held on
the special dates of Saturday, June 22
and Sunday, June 23, respectively.
Punk Island, a daylong celebration
of punk featuring over 80 bands playing
from six separate micro-curated stages,
will be held at the Harlem River Picnic
Area on Randall’s Island.
Porch Stomp, a daylong folk festival
comprising more than 150 performances,
jams and workshops featuring
some of the city’s top bluegrass,
old time, roots and American music,
will take place from the historic porches
surrounding Nolan Park on Governors
Island. The performances will also include
a Mass Appeal Banjos Parade
and Mass Appeal Shape Note Singing.
All Make Music New York events are
free and open to the public. Participants
who wish to perform, or to host musical
events, may register at MakeMusicNY.

The Multicultural Music Encounters
Concert Series will launch a
3-part concert series beginning May
23rd, 2019 featuring compositions from
different cultures highlighting major historical
events from around the world
paired dialogue discussion and and music
presentation. The series will feature
the MMG Orchestra and MMG Youth
Orchestra, bringing together the talents
of students and musicians from New
York City.
The fi rst presentation for this year
is The Caste System in India on Thursday,
May 23, at 7 p.m. at the Aaron Davis
Hall in the City College of New York,
Convent Avenue and 135th Street in
Upper Manhattan. This event will feature
the music of R. C. Rahman and
Amit Trivedi.
The second presentation honors
women in history with a particular mention
to an unfortunately situation that
took place in Puerto Rico during World
War I. This event will take place on Friday,
June 7, at 7 p.m. at the Studio Theater
in Lehman College, 250 Bedford
Park, and will feature the music of Johanny
Navarro and Sylvia Rexach.
The last presentation will focus on
the affective or emotional effect of music
and how this aural phenomenon can
help with our educational process. This
event will take place on Friday, June 21,
at 7 p.m. at the Lovinger Theater in Lehman
College, 250 Bedford Park Boulevard.
The presentation will feature the music
of Frederick Adler and Bruce Purse
and will explain the effect of music in
education and medicine.
