announces the 2019 Annual Thesis Exhibition
for graduating M.F.A., M.A. and B.F.A.
students, on view Thursday, May 23 through
Sunday, June 2.
The exhibition features work in a variety
of media and surveys a range of concepts
and creative approaches that characterize
today’s cultural landscape, showcasing the
contemporary art practice of a rising generation
of artists. The exhibition represents
a distillation of intensive education and
serves as a refl ection on each student’s
personal experience in Lehman College’s
art programs. Through a range of degrees
and concentrations at both undergraduate
and graduate levels, the Art Department
offers students the unique opportunity to
study in rigorous art programs in which
both traditional studio and digital art practices
share common goals in helping students
build a strong foundation to advance
their careers.
The Thesis Exhibition features works by
16 artists graduating from Lehman’s Arts

The City Island Power Squadron and
the Leonard Hawkins American Legion
Post will host The 2019 Blessing of the Fleet
on Sunday, June 23, 1 p.m., at City Island
Harbor (near the ferry dock for Hart Island/
Fenton Marina), VHF Ch. 71 (from 12:30
p.m.
Participation is on the water only for this
multi-denominational blessing.

The Public Theater (artistic director,
Oskar Eustis; executive director, Patrick
Willingham) announced that a special, free
one-night-only event, Public Forum: Queer
& Now, will take place on Monday, June 17
at 8 p.m. at The Delacorte Theater in Central
Park. In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary
of the Stonewall Riots and World-
Pride in New York City, Public Forum adds
its voice to the chorus of LGBTQ+ artists,
activists, and organizers fi ghting for a better
tomorrow, today.
Hosted by Jomama Jones and directed
by Will Davis, Public Forum: Queer & Now
will feature appearances by Trevor Bachman,
Kate Bornstein, Lea DeLaria, Ryan
J. Haddad, the Jerriese Johnson Gospel
Choir, Erin Markey, Darnell Moore, Peppermint,
Toshi Reagon, Conrad Ricamora,
Aneesh Sheth, Chase Strangio, and more.
Join in a celebration of music, poetry, prose,
and theater as Public Forum: Queer & Now
honors the legacy of resistance and the ongoing
fi ght for LGBTQ+ liberation and pride.
PUBLIC FORUM: QUEER & NOW is an Offi
cial WorldPride Event.
Before Public Forum: Queer & Now, The
Public Theater will host a Civic Fair from 4 to
6:30 p.m. in front of The Delacorte Theater.
The Civic Fair will be centered on engaging
audiences to activate their individual and collective
civic power to create change in their
communities. Attendees will be able to sign
up to volunteer, register to vote, and learn
more about local and regional resources advancing
issues that directly impact the LGBTQ
community. A list of participating organizations
will be available in advance of the
event by visiting PublicTheater.org.
The Public’s Public Forum is a space
where art, ideas, and action collide. Previous
Public Forum events at The Delacorte
have included the 2018 We Rise: A Celebration
of Resistance, in collaboration with the
Resistance Revival Chorus, a celebratory
look at the past, present, and future of resistance
and civic engagement by women that
featured Shakina Nayfack, Shaina Taub,
Flor de Toloache, and the Resistance Revival
Chorus. In 2016, Welcome Home: A
Celebration of World Refugee Day, in partnership
with the International Rescue Committee,
began with a naturalization ceremony
for brand new American citizens led
by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh
Johnson on the stage of The Delacorte. In
2014, Public Theater Scholar in Residence
James Shapiro curated Public Forum:
Shakespeare in America to celebrate the
Bard’s plethora of work with notable participants
James Earl Jones, Alec Baldwin, and
Jessica Chastain. In 2013, What Are We
Worth? Shakespeare, Money, and Morals,
a partnership with the Aspen Institute, featured
readings from Shakespeare’s greatest
works by acclaimed actors Alan Alda, Vanessa
Redgrave, Liev Schrieber, and Matt
Damon, and a town hall discussion by Harvard
professor Michael Sandel.
Tickets To Public Forum: Queer And
Now will be distributed in a number of ways.
On the day of the event, free tickets may be
acquired in person at The Delacorte Theater,
through a digital lottery via the TodayTix
website or mobile app, and via an in-person
lottery in the lobby of The Public Theater at
425 Lafayette Street. All tickets are subject

SBH Health System (St. Barnabas Hospital),
the Belmont Business Improvement
District and the offi ce of Councilmember
Ritchie Torres will hold “Picture a Healthier
You,” a street fair with fun and healthy activities
on Sunday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. on Crescent Avenue between Adams
Place and Hughes Avenue.
The free street fair will include healthy
activities with special events for seniors.
Included will be such health-related activities
as blood pressure, BMI and mammography
screenings; healthy cooking
demos; and Zumba and yoga activities.
There will also be the chance to speak with
physicians, nurses and registered dietitians
from the hospital; take home samples
of healthy snacks and health care materials;

participate in raffl es; and receive giveaways.
SBH Health System is a leading proponent
of population health, with the goal of
improving the health outcomes of the people
it serves. In spring 2020, SBH will open
the Health and Wellness Center at SBH on
Third Avenue, across the street from St.
Barnabas Hospital, with 50,000 square feet
dedicated to health and wellness services.
This will include an integrated health area
that will focus on the many dimensions of
wellness, from providing a gym to a teaching
kitchen. Much of the fresh produce used
in the teaching kitchen will be grown on a
rooftop urban farm. SBH will also operate an
outdoor terrace designed to accommodate
stress reduction activities through the inclusion
of a walking path, yoga pavilion, and
multi-use area for meditation and Tai Chi, as
well as centers for women and children, and
an urgent care.

Upcoming New York Botanical Garden
events and programs include:
Bronx Green-Up supports more than
200 local greening groups, schools, and
community organizations in their missions
to improve their neighborhoods through
greening projects. In honor of this anniversary,
four teen photographers from the
Bronx Documentary Center’s Bronx Junior
Photo League—18-year-old Tony Baizan-
Garcia, 19-year-old Kayla Beltran, 18-yearold
Mitchell Harris-Dennis, and 16-year-old
Tianna Maldonado—spent the summer visiting
Bronx Green-Up community gardens
and urban farms, documenting the activity
of these organizations, from planting, weeding,
and composting to harvest and celebration.
Their dynamic photos will be on view
showcasing community-building and activism
taking place all across the borough.
Fresh from the Garden Tastings, through
November 3: Saturday, May 25 and Sunday,
May 26, 2 to 2:30 p.m. and 4 to 4:30 p.m.
Cooking demonstrations, presented by
Whole Foods Market®, encourage families
to get hands-on with healthy cooking. New
recipes featuring plants grown in the Edible
Academy are offered each week. Edible
Academy staff will demonstrate familyfriendly
recipes using seasonal vegetables,
fruits, and herbs.
Dig! Plant! Grow! Salad Days!, through
June 21: Saturday, May 25, 1:30 to 5:30
p.m.; Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27,
10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Garden “salad days” are here! Explore
the spring crops (and lots of lettuce!) growing
in the garden, mix and make your own
salad take-home packet of herblicious salad
dressing, and make a plant-parts salad art
collage to remember your visit by.
Budding Botanists, through June 7: Saturday,
Sunday, and Monday, May 25, 26,
and 27, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Stand up for
plants! Become a plant champion in the
Children’s Garden this spring. Discover
bulbs and buds as they wake up and seeds
sprout. Search for plants and animals in the
Children’s Garden as they grow and change
through the season. Make a seed sprouting
tape to plant at home and design a button
that proclaims why you love plants.
Bird Walk, Saturday, May 25, 11 a.m.:
Bring your binoculars and walk the Garden
grounds with a bird expert. You’ll search for
our feathered friends and learn more about
bird-friendly habitats, passage birds, and
those that make a permanent home at the
Garden.
Garden Highlights Tour, Saturday and
Monday, May 25 and 27, 11 a.m.: The Native
Plant Garden houses a diverse collection of
ferns, perennials, shrubs, and trees native
to the northeastern United States. Join us
for a guided tour through these re-created
habitats.
History of NYBG Walking Tour, Saturday
and Monday, May 25 and 27, 2:30 p.m.: Join
in for a tour of historically signifi cant sites
within the Garden’s 250 acres. Receive a
fascinating overview of the Garden’s history
and its importance as a vital NYC cultural
destination since 1891.
Azalea Garden Tour, Sunday, May 26,
11 a.m.: Join us for a guided tour of the 11-
acre site that offers an encyclopedic collection
of the world’s azaleas planted along a
broad hillside punctuated by rock outcrops
and shaded by mature native trees.
Thain Forest Tour, Sunday, May 26,
12:30 p.m.: Experience the beauty of the
Garden’s 50-acre Forest on this one-hour
walking tour with a Tour Guide. You’ll learn
facts about the trees, history, geology, and
ecology of this original, uncut woodland.
Native Plant Garden Tour, Sunday,
May 26, 2:30 p.m.: The Native Plant Garden
houses a diverse collection of ferns,
perennials, shrubs, and trees native to the
northeastern United States. Join us for a
guided tour through these re-created habitats.
Rose Garden Tour, Monday, May 27,
12:30 p.m.: Immerse yourself in the fragrance,
color, and beauty of the award-winning
Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden on a
tour with a Garden Guide. Learn the differences
between Heritage and Modern roses
and between fl oribundas and hybrid teas as
well as facts about rose history, cultivation,
and folklore.
